the Josh Gates show "Expedition Unknown" has an episode ( airing tonight*) on the subject of a very old and unsolved treasure hunt in France. "On The Trail Of The Golden Owl" / "Sur la trace de la chouette d'or" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_the_Trail_of_the_Golden_Owl* The episode is listed for tonight on the Discovery channel. "...A book of riddles gives cryptic clues to where the Owl statuette, worth half-a-million dollars, is hidden. Josh joins treasure hunters using new leads to chase the fortune." www.discovery.com/schedule

I thought that was a very nicely done show..... great summary on the hunt-- some solutions to the puzzles, and then suggested solutions to others which are not conclusive.... The book is in French...(and therefore all the puzzles and solutions)....so since I don't speak it, it's quite difficult to work on it...lol....(I would love to though)...

I love the Golden Owl hunt, though the fact this has been unsolved for 27 years suggests it's the trickiest to solve! I translated the clues and what's known so far on a website goldenowlhunt.co.uk in case anyone wants to have a go. The mysterious 'spiral with four centres' has been driving me mad for years lol

The mysterious 'spiral with four centres' has been driving me mad for years lol I got very interested in it, but then thought a lot might be lost in translation. In addition, if I understand correctly, there could be references to French history and geography.

You might be right astree, though the sticking point to my mind seems to be the overall game mechanic. It's clearly about drawing lines on a map, and Max Valentin had produced similar hunts in the past. So one big question would be what is being drawn? I've spent far too long on this one and taking a break! But occasionally the site leads to nice emails from other hunters that spark ideas.
