Aaaaaah, the question on everyone's mind... What are the nine clues in his poem?
Well let's try and look at it from different points and theories. Some... you might agree with, some... you will certainly not.
For ease of subject I've color coded (with shading) the nine clues. I am putting up 6 examples, with a brief explanation of each. I will not discuss which one is my belief.
Whew that was a lot of work! Now let's review each type.
TYPE A: The Anti Authoritarian and Impatient Searcher---- This is a searcher who does not believe the man who hid the treasure chest, when he said that the first clue is "Begin it where warm waters halt." This person sees the first stanza as important, and they see it as the reason no one has found the treasure. Forrest lied to them! The first clue is "As I have gone alone.." Whether it's a matter of distrust in Forrest's authority or the first stanza just perfectly "fits" something they saw on the map or in research, they choose to go this route. In that same simplistic view, they also see the Chase over when you find the blaze, and the rest is just "blah blah banter."
Type B: The Impatient Loyal Searcher---- This searcher is one who trusts Forrest Fenn. If that man said WWWH is the first clue, then by Thor himself...That's how it starts! But as with Type A, they want to get to the blaze and find the treasure in a hurry. They pay attention to little else outside stanzas 2 and 3.
Type C: The Detail Inclusion Searcher---- This type of person sees added parts of stanzas as meer distance or directional inclusion and dismiss the possibility that they are separate clues. In their mind they see a canyon obvious at the correct WWWH to follow so it's included in that clue. Same with paddle up the creek. They see the Just as an inclusion of heavy loads and water high as details of that creek so it's the same clue.
Type D: The "Don't Sweat the Details" Loyal Searcher---- This type of searcher believes in Forrest's assertion of WWWH being the 1st, and do not care about the small details. To them... too far to walk is simply that...a long distance. The end is ever drawing nigh? They believe it speaks for it self...you are getting near the end, so its not a clue. Looking quickly down to them is exactly as it sounds, you'll look down or to the south so no need for it to be a clue. To them, tarry scant is just taking a moment of awe to appreciate the view of the chest once you see it (despite Forrest saying it's "hidden") They quickly find that they are a couple of clues short, so they just throw out something into the last stanza.
Type E: The Strange Connections Loyal Searcher---- This searcher follows Fenn's 1st clue assertion, but looks to make sense of strange statements or connections. One of the most key differences is this person's belief that the entire third stanza is one separate clue. They see a semicolon as bringing in two closely related statements together. This person believes that the creek you are looking for, is not for the meek, turns to the left, and has heavy loads and water high. They are also taken aback by strange statements like "brave and in the wood", or "tarry scant with marvel gaze", or even "hear me all and listen good." They see this as possible clues that need explaining.
Type F: The Nine Clues/ Nine Sentences Searcher---- This person is generally seen as a poem purist, but sometimes are not. They do not use mysterious thought into each line. They see a fact that there are 9 clues and 9 sentences. To them, it just makes sense. Even in the face of Forrest's direction that the first clue is WWWH, this searcher will STILL stick to his nine sentences.
In the end...which one are you? It's definitely something to ponder.
