Nice find with the signal bells! The gazebo though didn’t exist until about 1994, so unfortunately it’s out. I believe the Pere Marquette statue is circa 1987 and therefore also out. The one feature in Pere Marquette Park that I’m most interested in would be the walls along the edge of the trail at the north and south ends of the park. If that existed in the early 80s it might support a possible solution.
I agree on the view from the park though as it gives you City Hall AND Laureate. If it was only City Hall you could use the Chicago Water Tower/Cleveland Terminal Tower argument, but since it’s both I feel the casque needs to be buried in that general vicinity and Pere Marquette Park fits the criteria.
The Laureate was commissioned in memory of Harry Lynde Bradley. Bradley was a founding member of the John Birch Society. John Birch died at 27....maybe the “young birch” in the verse?

Here's a 1983 image of the park overlooking Laureate. Pretty naked and unexciting! Second image from 1977 right after remodel (the opposite side).

canuck, I like the young birch reference.
Do you guys know if Mr. Preiss ever put proper names in a poem without capitalization?

canuck, I like the young birch reference. Do you guys know if Mr. Preiss ever put proper names in a poem without capitalization? You could consider the Roanoke verse: "Ride the man of oz (sic)." Byron Preiss also capitalized and lowercased other words and adjectives inconsistently..."Of him of Hard word in 3 Vols."..."Education and Justice"..."Of the v"..."Waits the Fair remuneration"...etc.

Thanks Choice! Hmm no wall by the looks of it, which is too bad. I had this idea that it could be in the 5th of those planters on the wall. There are 3 on each side of Pere Marquette Park and if you start on the north side and head south the 5th planter is right in line with the Pere Marquette statue. It looks good today, but not so much 40 years ago. The passage of so much time is often just as tough as figuring out the image and verse.
Thanks goldhunter, as you know, Byron was devious with his word play so always trying to get into his mind to solve these puzzles.
Maybe we stay on the east side of the river? The landscape architecture around the Marcus Center is interesting with the rows of trees, squares of greenery and benches that have “feet”. The architect himself is interesting...Dan Kiley, this guy designed the courtrooms for the Nazi war crimes trials at Nuremberg, how is that for a German connection? Interesting area, but unfortunately it sounds like it may have been redone in the last couple years. Had this grid of 36 horse chestnut trees as a main feature.

You’ll see a letter from the country Of wonderstone’s hearth
There used to be large letters on a marquee on Milwaukee City Hall. This would have been there when the casque was buried so may as well put it out there as a possibility.

Also with Roanoke, two friends of octave- Frank and Wilbur Wright were friends with Octave Chanute.

I wonder if the reverse is valid too i.e. Twain may only be twain for twins. Afterall June is for Gemini.

That's a valid question.
