The most obvious clue is the shape of the paper... I'm guessing county shape?

"different stages" of what?
I feel like we're looking for more names, like: spare x summer x song of x (and another) What is "x" and is the 4th x something in the book or do we extrapolate?
I never found time to re-read the book to find the objects from the previous clue!

I started re-reading it and the only thing so far from Clue 4 I see mentioned is the crow with the white pebble. I don't recall any of the other items either.
I agree about the four.
I just looked at all the counties in New England. The shape of the paper didn't jump out at me.
Does anyone know what the black is around the paper? Also, it' weird that half of it is in shadow.

I realized theres a big problem with this hunt. We’re eventually looking for a maple, but it’s so late in the year the leaves are pretty much all off the trees, and will be even more so in six weeks when the last of the hints comes out. Trying to identify a maple without leaves is going to be really tedious if not impossible. This may have to wait until spring to be solved.

It's not 'just a maple'- it's a many trunked maple, small in stature-- and I'm assuming the other clues will direct us to the location of this 'tree', which has to have a 'crack to reach into' nearby. I'm not thinking it not having leaves will matter much.

Maybe. But there are lots of smallish trees compared to big oaks and pines, such as beech. And many trunked trees are a dime a dozen around here.

At first I liked the idea of "time" for the four stages. But the author refers to whatever these mystery stages are as a "her" and a "she", or female. Time is usually a male, as in "Father Time".

I have a somewhat solid theory, but I need help.
I think the reference might be 'moon' or 'moonlight' The moon/moonlight is mentioned exactly four times in the book. The moon goes through phases, or 'Stages' The moon is often personified as a female
“As I did I bent to pick up a glittering speck that, in the SPARE moonlight, resembled a fallen star.” (Chpt. 2)
“Hey hey hey hazel eyes, wanna come and dance in the moonlight?”(Chpt. 22) SONG written for Sandra
“The light of the SUMMER moon” (Chpt. 42)
The one reference I can't get anything from is this: “I spent hours on that floor arranging each item just so, while the moon outside my window slid to the Western corner of the early summer sky, and, behind me, the sun rose in that first startling burst of light, like a switch had been thrown” (Chpt. 42)

Yes, the answer is moon. I had this solved weeks ago, just didn’t post it. That last paragraph matches where she says “and another.”

Good job on that, BTW. Do you have the Kindle version, or did you read through the book and find those references?

My solve for this was Half Moon State Park.
The 'moon' connection is obvious.
Then "like a mother she watches over us."
The park is in Hubbardston VT (like Old Mother Hubbard).
It is part of the larger Bomoseen State Park (seen as in watches.)
