Hey folks, I have some ideas for you. I am skeptical that anything can be found after all these years in regards to the NY treasure but here are my ideas that may be new to you. I just don’t have any desire to ever visit NY and go digging, so maybe this will help someone else.
There are dark images under the L/R arms of the woman. Some think it is a large 51. I think it is more likely “SL” per the 'S' character is not shaped the same as a 5. So if it is SL, that would mean Statue of Liberty.
I believe Battery Park is a 100% where to look. If you look at the dome images matching the domes of Ellis Island, in the center of the image I believe that peninsula extending into the blue of the image is Manhattan. And at the lower left there is a distinct dot where Battery Park is. So the dot marks Battery Park. Some online images don’t have this dot, so I am assuming the dot is in the real image.
If you google Eagle wings monument images in NY, the only image that matches the bird wings is the East Coast Memorial in Battery Park. The bird image tail looks like a Squid. So do the legs. The memorial is in honor to dead military men lost at sea during the war. Sea men are called squids.
The clock could be referring to the clock tower on Pier A in Battery Park. The square emerald in the water is about where the Statue of Liberty would be in relation to Manhattan.
The water wave imagery is possibly relating to the men lost at sea as well as the huge dark skull in lower right (sea dead). The arch area above the woman’s head is very close match to the large door entry of Clinton Castle. The Battery Park Cannon could be the reference to arm over path.
The Fort George Memorial Tablet looks like the yellow square in the image. The Jerusalem Grove Labyrinth or the Battery Fountain could match the large swirls in the bottom of the image and the various paths in the park.. hard to tell
The Netherland Monument could refer to a Dutch East India Company (Indies) and American Natives. Maybe he misread the sign. Manhattan was purchased from Natives.
The various bubble images could relate to all the granite monuments. Granite looks like that.
The only obvious Vs in the park are Giovanni da Verrazzano (V) and the Eagle wings which make a V if you look at them straight on and also in the image there is the obvious missing part of the circle in the Eagles wings that create a V reference. There is also a V in the Clock image (VI) but I can’t make much use of that one.
The Verrazzano statue has been moved and park paths have been modified, so it may be impossible to ever find it if that monument is the V reference. The Verrazzano (V) statue would be possibly too obvious? But maybe on the other hand the Eagle wings (V) would be too obvious. You would have to look at the East Coast Memorial Eagle to realize that it’s wings make a V shape.
The lady in the image has a bearded male face dark outline in her left hair line. That could reference a woman and man on the same statue, Giovanni da Verrazzano. Also the woman’s flower in the right hand could be the sword and the empty left hand could be a reference to her left hand that was damaged and remained empty for a long period of time and would have probably been empty at the time this book was written. The empty left hand would be a reference to the damaged monument.
But what about the half lion face? There is a flag pole monument for the first Manhattan Jewish settlement in the New Amsterdam Plein area of Battery Park and it has side faces of Lions.
Isle of B could be the Battery Parkway Bikeway since it wraps around the park.
So the next step if above guesses are correct would be to understand from what point to take 22 steps east of the East Coast Memorial (or the Verrazzano monument). This gets difficult and I can’t figure that out over the Internet with images. I’m guessing that 22 steps (or 22 something) east of the East Coast Memorial (or the Verrazzano monument) there may have been a park sign reference to old Manhattan or an old historic Lamp Post etc, (something old) since this park area is the oldest and the original part of Manhattan purchased from the Indians and a perfect NY park to teach the history of Manhattan to a treasure hunter. If so, does the sign or object still exist? This would assume the reference “Look down And see simple roots In rhapsodic man’s soil” to be referring to roots of MAN-hattan on a park sign or otherwise historic object, like a lamp post.
Edit: A very strong argument for the V referring to Giovanni da Verrazzano would be the images exposed nicely on this thread, credit to the excellent work of user SluggoZim. mysteriouswritings.proboards.com/thread/3160/image-12-verse-10 So there are lots of barely visible image references to Giovanni da Verrazzano being the real V.
As you can see Battery Park easily has everything required to solve the clues as it existed at the time the book was written. In the end, I don’t think it would be wise to go digging around for something in Battery Park this many years after the fact since the park is too important now and who knows how much it all has changed. I believe the secret as a treasure hunt is a huge fail. If most all of the "treasures" are lost to park renovations before they can be found, then it was a failure of either the artist or the writer or both. Good luck if you try however.
