I know NOTHING about bitmaps. Can anyone suggest a site that might help explain it? Thanks in advance! (And good luck to everyone playing!)

Yes, it took quite a few tries to figure out that one.

I haven't done a puzzle hunt before. The instructions say that there are 8 letter words. Might these "words" actually be phrases? Or if I find a phrase, does that mean I must do something to those 8 letters to get to a single word?

Or if I find a phrase, does that mean I must do something to those 8 letters to get to a single word? A: Fair question. A kodeword is not necessarily a single valid english word. For example, things like HIGHFIVE or THEZEBRA or even ABCDEFGH would all be valid 8 letter kodewords. As an example (I don't think I'm spoiling much here): the first 8 letter kodeword is on Kard 000 and is simply FIRSTONE spelled out in text. [Also posted to the official Q&A thread]

Oh!
I was basically assuming anything that didn't make something recognizable was wrong. I'll look over the ones I had given up on already. And reconsider the possibility of "meafures" 😅
Thanks for the answer, I'm glad I don't have to manipulate "firstone" to find something else.

You won't find a kodeword that is KXLWEPFR for example. That said, sometimes the meaning may not be crystal clear, or the meaning may only be apparent at a later stage, or the meaning may be abbreviated to fit a fixed length (like TAKSUBWY might be a kodeword telling you to take the subway, for example).

Oh, Beale!!!! My 14 year old asked me what I was doing since I had been working on it for about an hour. I explained the cipher and the history of its origin. He asked to look at it while I made dinner. Truth: took him like 7 minutes flat. We have a new competitor!!!

Anyone find the red herring? As of right now, I'm just trying to deduce, identify and collect the various kodewords -- I'll evaluate them later for issues of tainted mackerel
