Do you know how long a piece of iron is needed to make a horseshoe?
You measure the horse's hoof, front to back, multiply by two and add an inch.
Most people don't know that, but I do because my friend Frank
Turley told me. And he told me because he's a blacksmith and I
paid him twenty bucks to make me one. I just stood there and
watched him bellow the coal to heat the metal. The pinging sound
of his pounding hammer against iron and anvil was thrilling to me in
a romantic sort of way. It had a certain cadence that was an integral
part of the total experience, as were the fumes from his forge that
permeated the whole episode. I could have just as easily been
watching a smithy in the 7th Cavalry shoe a horse. Those things are
important and I'm richer for it.
This is the one omega. But two is how many you are looking for.

Most equestrian trails are marked with two horseshoes at the trailhead. "The treasure chest certainly is in the mountains somewhere north of Santa Fe, and that is a clue. That is not to say it is exactly 360 degrees from Santa Fe, but generally. If you start chasing horseshoes you may go crazy, but it’s the thrill of the chase, remember?" dalneitzel.com/2012/10/02/forrest-gets-mail/

What if it isn't because the are Omegas (although I think there is a simple 'splanation) but because there are two of them? Maybe it has something to do with making two ends meet.....

How "in thought" do you go from 360° from Santa Fe to chasing horseshoes without them being connected somehow? You don't. The previous thought of 360° brought on the horseshoe thought, so if you think about the radius of a horseshoe, it's not quite 360° but generally.

We decorated with a welded horseshoe Christmas tree. In between each horseshoe is a place for a ornament

It is extremely difficult to imagine what Forrest's intentions were when he placed the omegas where he did. I think only he knows and unless it is explained in his autobiography we may never know.
Back when Dal had all of his videos on Vimeo I could find where Forrest talked about the carrot top nails, but since migrating to TheTube(for monetary gain I imagine) I have not viewed any of them at all.

Ugh, you guys are so close. They are clues but not what you think! I've got the first 4 solved 100% I'll share after my trip this summer and it will all make so much sense! If I dont find it, I wont be selfish and after I share the info I know someone else will for sure find it.

Since they were first seen used in the book 17 dollars a square inch, whatever explanation, should include the reason for why they are shown there too.... and maybe even in the one SB....
But then again, it might be something never known....Forrest said the reason will most likely go to the grave with him... (or something like that)...
