Great work there choice. Has anyone considered the "v" could be like a Catholic Church? They are all branches of the Vatican, although the "v" in the clue is not capitalized.

xmarksdspot, I liked your idea of "him" being a homonym. Sort of ties in with your Vatican idea, too

If you consider the rectangular opening in the obelisk a doorway then would the area in front of it that splits into two planter/beds a 'Vestibule'? Major stretch! The obelisk is of course an upside-down v.

I think the upper part of the image (the window) is all about Liberty, Ellis Island, and the old New Jersey train depot. They are listed there as the Historical Trilogy, each having played a role in immigration. They are even laid out approximately as you would view them from left to right. The statue of liberty is however placed in the open water area between Ellis Island and the train depot. The window from Ellis Island is a pretty good match if you equate 4 square panes to 1 in the painted image. To me, everything about the bird says gull except for the head. There may be some meaning there like sea travelers finding a home in America, represented by the eagle head. The gull/eagle could represent immigrants being ferried to the train depot to begin their final journey to their new homes. I think the eagle head definitely matches the one's on the ferry building on Ellis Island. There may be some more hidden references in the other window squares but I have yet to be able to see them. Following my original Silver Lake solve by the golf course, The bird/eagle could also mean birdie, eagle, the tail is a wedge, there's a 3 in the wing (Par 3?). I haven't abandoned this idea because I believe Staten Island is at least partially written across Lady Liberty in the painting.

There was a push in the late 70's to fix up the structures on Roosevelt island. tinyurl.com/y2hou22c

It looks like those upper tiles/windows are just matching roof/finish to the tiles/windows below them.
