I believe he is now the only person ALIVE who knows this as his special place. It's all possibly about perspective. who's the dead one you think knew? Well what I mean by that, is perhaps it's a family known place in the Yellowstone area when he was a kid. All of his family that would know are gone now.

This is an option. I don't think it is as popular a place as the entire family knowing the area. There is a quote where he describes it as personal. I will have to review the quote. I may be remembering it incorrect.

One clue may be the uncertainty when Forrest responded to the question about whether the reason the hiding place is special will be known to the finder. Tarry scant "will your reasoning".

The quote was, “That’s true…I’ve taken this treasure chest to a very secret and very special place, and I’ve hidden it there…”
This is not an “area,” it is a “spot.” Look up the word “place.” Its synonyms include words like location, site, spot, position, point, etc. When “place” is used as a verb, it’s synonyms include words like put down, set, deposit, position, plant, rest, settle, situate, stow, etc.
How does he describe the spot? “Very Secret,” “Very Special,” and he has “hidden it there...”
Some here may remember an email wherein a well known searcher and community poster asked Fenn in an email, “So, no one is looking near the right spot?” In my estimation, “Near” the right spot could put you in the right “area.”
Forrest’s reply: “No one is looking AT the right spot.” That was his written emphasis of the word “AT.”
It’s a very secret hiding “spot” that he’s known since childhood, in my opinion, which is also WITHIN an area wherein he made a lot of family memories of which he is very fond.
