As many of you may already be aware a member of the search community lost his life while searching for the chest this past week. Another gentlemen with him was airlifted to the hospital and is being treated for exposure. I have been in contact with a close family friend and neighbor of the searcher that lost his life. This is the same person that posted a message in a facebook group but quickly deleted it after she felt she was being attacked. As you all can certainly understand situations like this for friends and family can be very emotional. She was initially very angry that this happened and this may have come across in her brief post but that wasn’t her intention. Please respect this person and the family’s privacy and don’t search out them or harass them. I will remain in contact with the family friend and ask questions within reason that anyone may have.
I have also been in contact with Forrest and he is aware of this. I would suspect he will be forthcoming with a statement through one of his usual channels soon.
Bellow is a statement directly from the Family friend that she wished me to share with the Chase Community (I made a couple of minor spelling and grammatical corrections but other than that this is quoted directly from her)
The link below is to the only known article relating to this incident as of this moment.

“They left Monday night. The deceased has been going to the same spot to search for over a year. He took a friend out with him on the first trip this winter two weeks ago. They did wreck the snow machines and were rescued. The friend had access to a 4 wheel drive truck and knew where to rent snow machines. We heard from my friend Tuesday night and his cell was getting pings in Colorado on Wednesday. However, Wednesday night, the police went to my friends (next door neighbor) house looking for her husband because the snow machines had not been returned that day. Thursday morning, still no word. The wife of the injured man also stated that the police went to her house Wednesday night looking for her husband. I believe this was when the alerts with police and rescue became on their radar. By Friday morning, the wife and I contacted our county sheriff and filed a missing persons report. When the officer came into my house, the wife was on the phone with the sheriff from another county, who I believe sent out the SAR.
Saturday morning, a call came from the northern county saying they found the truck at an abandoned house, food and water and one set of foot prints in the snow. Two hours later, we were told the men were found together on the river. Which is very far from where the truck was. Oh and no findings on the snow machines. The paper said the friend waved them down with a sled. Not true. The men were found via air. And the friend was unconscious. He was air lifted to the hospital and my friend didn't make it.
I do have questions on the truck, the food and water and the one set of footsteps. The house was not in a place that you could walk from river to house. The river was quite far down a rocky mountainside. When found, they had not eaten or had water since Tuesday .
My question to my friend would be, why change up your routine? Why was there no activity at the usual starting point, if you were THAT close to finding the treasure.”
