I came across an interesting bit of history, that might lead to a new treasure hunt... In the early 1900's a London newspaper set up a series of fairly easy treasure hunts, burying medallions that could be redeemed for cash. The clues were simple descriptions of the locations leading to the treasure, so people had to recognize the locations and go look. This all went a bit crazy and people were digging up gardens and getting police warnings! To some of the people finding these medallions long ago it was a significant amount of money, one woman said, "Now I can buy my children clothes." Another had no job but used the prize to start a business. I thought these kind of treasure hunts started around 1970 but obviously there were a few similar things earlier. I'd love to know what the oldest treasure hunt game might be!? I read about this old hunt here: www.planetslade.com/treasure-hunt-riots1.htmlWhat peaked my curiosity was that the treasure hunt was stopped due to the chaos it was causing, but there were still a number of the medallions that weren't found. I'd love to find the old newspapers with the clues and track the lost medallions down... No cash prize any more, but it would still be a cool thing to do! Might be hard to manage, but I can dream!
