I've always been baffled by the paragraph that follows the poem in TTOTC (p133). (And by most other things in the chase!)
Subtle clues in the stories - fine.
Vital no-one else knows the treasure location - yep, ok.
Two can keep a secret if one of them is dead - what? So someone else (1) has been to the treasure location, but they're not around to tell any tales? Why say in the first line of the poem that you went alone then? Presumably went alone with the treasure but had been there before with someone else, or why else put 'two can keep a secret'?
Captain Kidd/Gardiner's Island - ok, you've lost me now.
The rest of the chapter follows perfectly and logically, then this rather bizarre set of thoughts that don't appear to relate to each other.
Without referencing your own potential solution, what do you make of this paragraph?

I think the Gardiner Island/Captain Kidd is a confirming hint. It will not help you until you’ve figured something out. Like the rest of the hints, it’s an aberration.

Since Forrest mentioned the Rosetta Stone, I did some research on it today. On Wikipedia site, skip scrolling down and it mentions Gardiner. He was an Archaeologists that organized the hieroglyphs. Under The heading “original stele” Scroll a little bit more and there is another link there for gardiner’s sign list. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosetta_Stoneen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardiner%27s_sign_list

I think forrest makes a lot of inside jokes (the kidd part of the aberration)... He’s laughing on the inside, but straight faced on the outside. His jokes often include hints. The information before and after the poem contain huge hints, i think.

Forrest said he like Egyptian things. And he has mentioned “Thoth” several times.

All, I believe Forrest stating that it was vital that no one share his knowledge of the treasure location combined with two can keep a secret if one of them is dead, may be him subtlety stating that the information to correctly identify the “where” the treasure is is wholly contained within the poem and not outside of it. For as he has said in another statement, that I paraphrase: “No one has any secret information to the treasures hiding place. It’s in the poem for all to see” mysteriouswritings.com/questions-with-forrest-fenn-and-the-thrill-of-the-chase/questions-with-fenn-archive-1/But he then goes on to write about Captain Kidd, and to Jenny’s credit and her 2013 posting about “The Gold Bug” (see link below) Forrest may have been subtlety hinting at that story and how that treasure was found and the methodology used in locating it. For all the information that Legrand needed to find Kidd’s treasure was wholly found within the decryption on the fools cap. mysteriouswritings.com/how-to-solve-the-thrill-of-the-chase/Seannm

The line:
'I dreamed the other night that I had been reincarnated as Captain Kidd and went to Gardiner's Island looking for treasure. It scared me so badly I was jarred awake and don't remember whether I found it or not.'
Forrest often says 'I didn't say I buried the chest but that doesn't mean it isn't buried'...
To me, that line about Captain Kidd could be the 'subtle hint' that Forrest actually did Bury the treasure--- because that is what Captain Kidd did with his treasure. Maybe Forrest thinks I gave a 'hint/clue' on whether it is buried or not......and no reason to state it again.....

Jenny, I guess it might be prudent to ask why he didn’t want to give whether it was buried or not as a clue. For me I ask if it was given as a hint/clue that it was in fact buried would that potentially eliminate many areas in the Rocky Mountains that he couldn’t “legally” hide it or would then cause recovery issues for the eventual finder. I mean how many holes would there be in YSNP or Glacier NP if Forrest had said that he had in fact buried it, even though it is not legal to dig holes in a national park. m.youtube.com/watch?v=SLqqxClGN-g“what if there isn’t a legal question?” f Seannm

Sean, I have the same overhanging question about why didn’t he want to give “buried” as a clue. He has made comments about the vagueness of the word “buried” , so maybe that’s the explanation or maybe not. it
Jenny, whats curious to me is why Forrest wrote that the dream scared him.

Burying the chest would be the best way to assure the "right type" of person finds it, imo. I haven't had a metal detector with me at the spot I've been excavating. Maybe excavating isn't the best word to use there since I haven't actually been digging. Another way to bury something is to place enough objects over something that the something is no longer visible. So if it is buried, maybe it isn't buried with any material which would require digging. To me, Forrest seems like the type of person that would really want us to dig for it somehow.
I do not encourage or condone digging in our National Forest or National Parks in any way at all, without a permit.

I believe I have made this much more complicated than necessary by not having read the book which contains the poem that I am learning to follow.
I have no idea what the paragraph after the poem says. That just seems absurd.
Fine. I'll buy a book. You win, Forrest.
