“It was under a canopy of stars in the lush, forested vegetation of the Rocky Mountains and had not moved from the spot where I hid it more than 10 years ago.....”
Seems like an odd choice of words? He doesn’t say “was found” - and maybe he was just saying in general that the treasure was sitting under the stars at night. But the first read through felt like it was found under a canopy of stars....

I've said that multiple times and people just laughed at me

It is a bizarre choice if words. Almost as if someone has told him the correct solve but haven’t gone to get it?

It is written that “it was under” past tense therefore it is no longer under.

Yes, every night the treasure lay under a canopy of stars. The question is whether or not it was found under that same canopy of stars. The sentence is ambiguous but mentioning the stars is curious and leaves open the interpretation it may have been found at night.
Is there some star/moon alignment necessary to guide one to the final spot that is only present certain times? Personally I discounted that possibility awhile ago because it seemed far too restrictive. But maybe this is the important possibility he mentioned that no one was seriously considering? And it could give a method for leading someone to a remote spot within a few feet.
Excited to find out....

If it had to be found June 5th as some are speculating, how was that coded in the poem? Sure, you might be able to get that info from the book and the dates, but always thought everything you needed for solve could be found in the poem.

I have two working theories as to why it was announced last night that the "treasure has been found" (I'll detail more once I know for sure the chase is over), but to answer your question.... Where to find June 5th in the poem? Well there are ways to get to washed out, pale, light (strawberry), and other words that lead to treasure(s), moon over, idolize, worship, honor. Friday, June 5, 2020 was the Strawberry Moon, it's in Sagittarius (fire), and it was in the overnight to June 6th, D-Day; this year is the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Friday, June 5, 2009 was also a Strawberry Moon. This Strawberry Moon, in Sagittarius, is symbolic of a war between truth versus deception; the underlying theme of the chase.

The is a specific way to interpret every line of the poem that gives step by step directions, no guessing. You only need the poem, it is self confirming. Forrest did an unbelievable job now this is guesswork regarding lush canopy of stars. (He seems to be saying it was in an open area and i believe it was within a batch of plants like or similar to, these) en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysimachia_borealis

Forrest's description of the setting sounds like he is describing what is showing in the photograph the finder sent him. My prediction is that the chest was found at night and the photo sent to Forrest shows it with the lid open before they even removed it from the hiding spot.
