The Thrill of the Chase, page 131-132: "So I wrote a poem containing nine clues that if followed precisely, will lead to the end of my rainbow and the treasure."
During an interview on the Richard Eeds Show on May 29, 2015 f said: "A clue will point you toward the treasure chest, and a hint will just help you with the clues, if you can understand that."And f has been quoted several times as saying: "Clues will take you closer to the treasure and a hint will help you with the clues." . . . A path can be followed. A path can point you toward. A path can take you closer. But a location can do none of those things. If there are nine paths, X fittingly marks the 10th spot. Maybe the poem reveals nine sets of degrees and distances.

Locations cannot be clues. The starting location is different than the first clue.
