If not a red herring (which it could very well be), could be a reference to Fenway Park... ball, grass, made the right call (balls / strikes) = baseball in Mass

It could be baseball. Took away the grass is sticking with me. That is something that was done in tennis when they started moving all of the grass courts to other surfaces.

I agree with everyone here. First thought when reading this stanza was baseball in Massachusetts. Which would be Fenway Park...the chalk being red is reference to Red Sox...
