Think about this statement for a while: "It was under a canopy of stars" that is pretty wide ranging isn't it, we can all be under a canopy of stars whenever we set foot outside at night. It has a deeper meaning than that to me. Imagine if you can that the circular cistern my solution led me too Forrest wanted us to imagine as the Zodiac wheel. If you were to get down into the cistern which was about 7' 6" deep and were to dig for something buried at its center then above you would be a canopy (covering) of stars, the Zodiac wheel itself. The statement from Forrest has that kind of meaning IMO.
