The most recent episode of the CBS show "NCIS" had a treasure hunt theme, clearly modeled after the Forrest Fenn hunt.
A billionaire buried a chest of riches in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia, and published a book of stories about his life along with three ciphers with clues to the location. The hunt has gone unsolved for at least ten years, and an online community of seekers has grown to exchange theories.
Of course, this being a procedural show, a murder occurs. Yes, greed and envy over a possible solution to the hunt is suspected. The backstory tells us about the billionaire's loss of his wife and estrangement from his grown daughter, whom he raised on a steady diet of solving puzzles. The show had to include a glimpse of the ciphers from his book, and they were straight out of the Beale Cipher template.
It all reminded me of another rich man's book "A Treasure Trove" and how much fun I had with it back in the day.
