Thanks for this, Jenny. It helps explain Pel's thought process when he created the hunt. I appreciate him sharing this additional information. As you said, we all had fun over the years with it even if we didn't like the ending. I don't think that takes away from the fun we had trying to figure out the clues, sharing ideas and for some of us, exploring the island.
One thing that Pel has said more than once though, that interests me. He said he did not include any clues to tell us to fold the pages to find the red/yellow compass roses. Yet when you fold page 19, the the first two letters and the last two letters of the top border,Forever Held, spells FOLD, and if you take the middle letter from each border on the same page, you get ROSE. If that was not intentional, what a coincidence!

If that was not intentional, what a coincidence! It does seem more than coincidental. The corner stores at the top of page 19 point to the first two and last two positions which correspond to the letters of FOLD. In addition the piano key code on page 11 gives letters for GO ROSE.

Thanks for doing the six questions on this one Jenny! Great to hear more from Pel. In response to many commenting on tidbits of the puzzle that seem relevant but he hasn’t mentioned, I still think it’s highly possible that he has simply forgotten many of the nuanced clues he included. It’s been 13 years after all. “Frame is ripped”, “if you have the time” after the old lady’s story, for example. astree piano keys also simply give a vertical yellow and horizontal red if you look at the extra, non sensical key in each group. More “key” to lat/long imo. drive.google.com/file/d/1EPOWLbjg_lnLTM18SCScAF6BkHis2zHQ/view?usp=drivesdk

Thank Pel for taking the time to address the questions. I very much enjoyed the book, the hunt, and visits to MDI. We got very close but none of us put it all together.

It turns out the accidental clues were better than the intentional ones!

It turns out the accidental clues were better than the intentional ones! That made me laugh! C Masquerade hint ... the Masquerade hint literally required folding pages! Thanks Jenny for posting this. Pel seems like a very genuine person, and seems honestly upset that he disappointed some with the solution. Myself, I had great fun working on this hunt and miss it already. And for those of you who never made it to MDI, I second Pel's recommendation to go there. It truly is a magical place.
