Ok, I’ve got a spreadsheet, colored coded and bolded for different things; I’ve tried every different method I could think of. And I’ve got plenty of nothing.
The timing of these clues makes me think they really want someone to solve this by Christmas. But it aint gonna be me!

And the rest of it was saying that the solution lies in the One Hit Wonders beginning with Never Gonna Give you Up and ending with In the Year 2525. Which would correspond with only those things that Patrick/Alex agreed truly were one hit wonders. |

Yes, I tried both titles and artists, both story order and record release order, tried blending the two based on whether artist or title was mentioned first in the story, tried alternating title and artist based on which person first mentioned the song, yet all of the decoders I used still came up empty. Curious to see what was done.

I ignored everything that wasn't a one hit wonder. Then I tried taking the first letter of what was sung for Alex's question, Patrick's question, either's question. Tried counting the number of words in artist, title, or both, then taking that letter of the lyrics. Tried Cesar shift on everything. Tried varying it by whether artist or title was mentioned first, whether the lyrics were sung or just spoken.
The tricky thing was, some answers had no lyrics (No Rain for example), some songs never had the title mentioned (Exile for example. They never said the name of the song. Were we supposed to use Till the Night Closes In or Kiss you All Over?), One artist had a symbol in the name (? and the Mysterians), some lyrics were incorrect ("Cool heart Johnny Ray" instead of "Poor Boy Johnny Ray"), etc.
I thought for sure we were meant to count letters in the lyrics because of this last issue.
But then again, he said Chap 4 is the easiest to solve and these are all a bit convoluted approaches IMO.

Ok, it seems to be the first letter of artist OR title, but I can't see a pattern which tells you which or why. I thought maybe it was related to whether Alex or Patrick asked the question, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Never outcast Rockwell Tubthumping Haddaway Video Eddie Gangham (why not Opa?) And Skyrockets (or Starland)

I'm not going to spend my time doing that, but Zagers and Evans isthe last band mentioned in that aforementioned section, and the last letter is Z so i'm guessing taking letters from the listed artists or something? While knowing the method on this one could narrow other chapters methods down, I think the other three take precedent now.

Start at the end with Zager and then bounce to the front for Rick. Keep bouncing to the end and the beginning as you work your way toward them middle. Not all will be used, as that is part of figuring out the method. So the last letter is Z for Zager. Then the R at the end of SILVER is Rick. The E is Eagle Eye Cherry. The V is Video Killed the Radio Star. The L is Layla...etc. That would be my guess.

I'm glad the solution was more simple than I'd made it out to be. I'm guilty of over-thinking it.

The catch was the lack of clear pattern in choosing title or artist (it does not appear to be based on who said what nor on which was mentioned first nor an alternating back and forth pattern), plus it wasn't necessarily the first word in either that was used.

It pattern was pretty straightforward... if it was sung it was first letter of the song if not sung it was the first letter of the artist...
With a couple snags or twists...
1. They don't seem to have counted one song that they argued about but the text seemed to settle on it was a one hit wonder.
2. They counted both the song and artist for one song which they both sung and said. Tricky!
3. And the final but most snaggy.... for "No Rain" You have to use the R for Silver... which just makes no sense.
Hopefully the final snag will be explained.
I only started this hunt a few days ago and my spreadsheet had all the songs/artists and first and last letters and I just never tried the sung vs said option. I tried a lot of others....
