For those unfamiliar with the Masquerade Treasure Hunt..... we'll be sharing facts here as we lead up to the release of....... The 1st Annual Masquerade Tribute! (A Collection of Nine Treasure Hunts for Charity) The illustrated story book entitled, Masquerade, by Kit Williams, was first published in 1979. The book introduced the world to a type of puzzle that leads readers to buried treasure. It was the beginning of the whole new genre of books - tagged as armchair treasure hunt books. The Treasure for Masquerade was a 18K Gold Hare encrusted with valuable gemstones (Ruby, Mother of Pearl, and Moonstones) (below). At the time it was valued at around 5,000 pounds..... HOWEVER.... in 1988, only 6 years after it was found, it was auctioned off, and went to the highest bidder at 31,900 pounds! Quite the Treasure!

I love the way you are honoring and commemorating this legacy to the treasure hunting community! Kit Williams was a hero of mine for other reasons and the main factor I even ever discovered armchair treasure hunts and the community! Thank you to everyone who is taking part!

One of the KEY pages for Masquerade was the 'Newton Page' (below).... It was discovered that if you follow the puppets order (seen in image) of Man, Children, Frog, Hare, Mammals, Birds, and Fish, and drew lines from their eyes to their longest digits, a riddle was spelled out.

Lines from the Left Eye through the Left Longest Finger, Left Eye through Left Longest Toe, Right Eye through Right Longest Finger, and Right Eye through Right Longest Toe, to letters in the bordering frame of the images, provided words or phrases from each image. Together these words formed the Riddle. It should be mentioned that in the front of the book was the phrase, ‘You must use your eyes’, which also hinted to the method. The Riddle found was: Catherines Long finger Over Shadows Earth Buried Yellow Amulet Midday Points The Hour In Light of Equinox Look you.
The first letter of each phrase given from the images yielded CLOSEBYAMPTHILL, confirming the Riddle, and also providing the final location.

In the image above, the border phrase of 'One of Six to Eight' was thought to be a big confirmer for the method/puzzle, and for the 'Eye to Letter' word of CATHERINE in the image....
For Catherine was the sixth wife of Henry the VIII....

One of the confirmations for discovery of the Masquerade Riddle was given in the Square made in the sand on the last image. If rearranged by a square found on image 4, it provides 10, 46, 4, 7, 7, 5, 6, 6 (KW), 6, 6, 6, 3, 4, 2, 527, 43. These happen to be the amount of letters found in each illustration, and of the Riddle. Catherines/ Long finger/ Over/ Shadows/ Earth/ Buried/ Yellow/ Amulet/ Midday/ Points/ The/ Hour/ In/ Light of Equinox/ Look you. 10 in the first, 4 and 6 in the second, and so on. It gives quite the 'aha' moment!

Here in this video we learn more about Quercus Cirucs and how Masquerade inspired parts of it: A MUST WATCH ..... it is a beautiful Treasure! I watched this earlier, and I must say I am in awe of how much inspiration David took from Masquerade, yet he has come up with a completely different concept for his own treasure hunt. I loved how he came up with his own concept for a treasure design, and was quite shocked to find how much it is valued at too!

I had a correspondence with Kit back in 2016 when I asked him about a small rabbit I had found in one of his Masquerade illustrations. The rabbit's location appears to match perfectly the location of where the treasure was purportedly found. So, I asked him specifically if the same rabbit could be found in the illustration in earlier printings of the book, or did he draw it in later versions for some reason.
I also asked him about his perspective on the Forrest Fenn treasure hunt. Well he ignored my first question, but did respond with this:
"I am afraid that my book Masquerade has absolutely no connection whatsoever with Forrest Fenn or anything done by him! You will not find any clues to his work in mine!
Bamber Gascoigne wrote a book called "The Quest for the Golden Hare" which explains in great detail how Masquerade was constructed plus some of the amazing stories of the people who tried to solve the puzzle aspect and find the Golden Hare ..., which in essence was an enticement to draw people into looking, really looking, at the paintings. Bamber's book is a good read which if you are interested in such things, you might find entertaining. It's probably available on the internet somewhere!"
I also contacted him recently about his thoughts of how the Forrest Fenn hunt ended and he was quite adamant that he had no interest whatsoever in anything Forrest Fenn.

Lol, obviously because it was a conversation with the creator of The Masquerade about The Masquerade. Try rereading for better comprehension..... I think it was your conversation with Kit Williams about Forrest Fenn's hunt that caused Jenny to question why you posted it here, under the Masquerade Treasure hunt thread. Neither Masquerade, Kit Williams, or the Masquerade Tribute hunt have anything to do with Forrest Fenn. I'm not even sure why you bothered Kit Williams to ask him about that hunt. Just because he wrote a book 40 years ago doesn't mean he follows any current hunts.
