As I thought the cogs are still too difficult!!!!, On with the first painting and if my eyes do not deceive me that looks like a masonic cipher, I take it that the pictures are split between the French and English puzzles with portions assigned to each, as I see from Facebook that the pictures are shared, aside from one which is unique to the English and a separate one that is unique to the French puzzle, is this right please?

The cogs are very difficult and most people think there are two levels to puzzle 6....it is pretty easy to get a 5 figure number but does that have to be further refined using 'the wheels' ? At this stage it is perhaps best that you just log down your answers and go to the riddles. The issue will be what to do with the puzzle answers ....are they are theme? do they relate to the Eternal Flames? Do they relate to the answers to the Riddles? Such questions await you!! And yes the pictures (apart from number 2 and 9) are shared between the French and the English puzzle. So for example in Riddle one the English puzzle is on the left side ....puzzle two is shared with a shared answer .....puzzle 3 the English is again on the left but on the right in puzzle 5. Have a good puzzling weekend

The red herring of a rail cipher at first proved hard to resist but bore no fruit at all beyond providing clues. I wonder if a railway is a clue somehow.
Do pray expand on this i am curious if we see things similarly and would like to hear your thoughts.

Cherry, the figure bottom left indicates the classic shape of a 3 layer rail cypher but does not work with letters provided apart from what appears to be an MK post code, I must ask myself is this a confirmation or is the rail cipher a clue, perhaps there is a major railway connecting the City with no park to somewhere else, the picture in the background (the watermark) looks like a rail with the usual gravel bed (to my mind). I thought that these indicated as clues 1. a railway cipher and then 2. the railway variant of the particular encrypter to solve this puzzle, both were red herrings which leads me to conclude that the railway hint which appears twice here (in my interpretation) is either a clue for later on or a deliberate ploy by the creators of the puzzle to mislead. I hope this makes sense.

The shared answer was about reverse measurement in my view

I had thought it referred to Model 3 Enigma with an AAA setting

I had thought it referred to Model 3 Enigma with an AAA setting Hi Cherry, MK3 Kreigsmarine gives same output as Mk 4 Kreigsmarine on these settings and both are correct for solving this puzzle, providing reflector and plug board are correctly configured and yes as indicated in picture set to AAA. I had noted the same output across both Machines. Initial thoughts around which mode to use was influenced by the inclusion of the rail cipher as there is an Enigma Machine called the Railway Enigma, however if you read my comments I advised that this was not correct and to my way of thinking a red herring, does this make sense or have I communicated poorly?

Yes I see where cherry is coming from on this and also you Venoom, I agree that both answers can be separated out as as the English and French part but a combined message to exchange measurement systems is also present. I don't believe that this picture has any other meaning aside from swapping the measurement system unless there is anything further regarding The Fool later on.

I am pleased to say that the first picture puzzle was not hard to solve, I must remember that there are a few versions of the masons cipher, picture two was to the best of my understanding just a guide as to which measurement to use. Picture three leading from Alice In the Looking Glass Red King in the Lewis Carol book sleeping in the forest, therefore the numbers in the picture must be a book cipher, though I see no reference to page or section and have run through the relevant chapters in the book no results are visible. The use of V yields nothing in square V nor pg 5. I think a walk along the river is in order as I am quite flummoxed!!! "No hints please gentle and good folk, I need to figure this out myself!!! I will ask for help if I can not figure this out.

Hi
No it was just that I had never heard of the rail cipher and was curious that I might have missed something. The problem is that the puzzles are often multi layered and you are never quite sure when they are totally finished. Cherry

Cherry Thanks Cherry, the history of the Enigma is fascinating and well worth a visit to Bletchley Park where the original buildings and Enigma machines can be seen in the museum, if you have not been yet.
