For those not on Social Media, The Golden Treasure of The Entente Cordiale is sharing a few things on their accounts (twitter/Facebook).... For filing, I'll note them here. Will they help solve the riddles and hunt? Maybe? Maybe not....... but they will provide some more historical background and other interesting insights....and you never know....maybe they would throw some small hint in there sometimeIF on Social Media, here is their FB page to follow: www.facebook.com/goldentreasureuk/ From the FB Public page:HISTORICAL ANECDOTE #1 For our first historical anecdote, we approached the Emile Loubet Association in Montélimar, which aims to gather all possible archives and information on the famous man from Montélimar. It is thanks to them that you can read below this text evoking Emile Loubet's marked taste for cigars 🚬 Here the English translation from the document : President Loubet, a smoker Mr. Emile Loubet was an intrepid smoker who would drop the pipe only to use a cigar. King Edward VII himself was also a significant smoker, however he only liked the cigar, and abusing it gave him long insomnias. One day, as the King from England vacationed at the Rambouillet castle, Mr. Loubet, in the face of entreaties from the queen, affectively intervened and invited him to moderate his smoking. -But, answered Edward VII, tobacco isn’t harmful. You are proof of it as you hold yourself healthily despite smoking more than me. There is no doubt that passionate smokers will be able to take advantage of the long life of the former president of the Republic to state that tobacco is not as damaging as some would lead to believe.

HISTORICAL ANECDOTE #3 Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company is an English manufacturer well known for the various boxes they have given to various public figures. This kind of gift is a tradition of the city of London 🇬🇧 Goldsmiths & Silversmiths means goldsmiths as goldsmiths traditionally work with both metals. The Sultan of Turkey Abd'ul Aziz J'ai (1830-1876) received a box in 1867 in honour of the first visit of a Turkish Sultan to Europe. Later, in 1909, we find evidence of another box given to Queen Victoria, now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, on the occasion of her visit to a new London borough. Finally, in 1930, Canadian Prime Minister Bennett was also presented with a Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co.It is now kept in the New Brunswick Museum. Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co had also made all the silver on the Titanic (more images to see on the FB post)

FROM the hunt's Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/goldentreasureuk HISTORICAL ANECDOTE #4King Edward VII, one of the architects of the Entente Cordiale, was already a huge fan of France. He even defied his mother Queen Victoria over his fondness for this country. 🇫🇷 In 1889, she forbade him from attending the Exposition Universelle because it was the centenary celebration of an anti-monarchist revolution. But Edward went to Paris as a private citizen, and was the first non-engineer visitor to be invited to go up the Eiffel Tower with Gustave Eiffel, a huge honour. Eiffel actually preferred to invite an English prince rather than a French politician.

HISTORICAL ANECDOTE #5 In 1903 Emile Loubet was the first non-royal French ruler to visit the UK. And before him, the two previous visiting French rulers didn’t fare too well: both King Louis Philippe and Emperor Napoléon III died in England 🇬🇧 (They were both in exile there at the time – the Brits were always ready to welcome fleeing French monarchs.)

HISTORICAL ANECDOTE #6 In the 1840s, King Louis Philippe of France was the first to talk about an Entente Cordiale between Britain and France. Perhaps in an attempt to make it sound more attractive to Queen Victoria, he called it a “Cordiale Entente”, putting the adjective before the noun, as English-speakers do.🇬🇧 Evidently, Queen Victoria could not have cared about the name that much, or perhaps did not find it very entertaining, as the name did end up being the “Entente Cordiale”, as we know it today.

HISTORICAL ANECDOTE #7 Did you know that this famous accord between our countries was reduced to four articles and signed in London! However, it became a fully fledged alliance during World War I. It’s a good thing France and England signed the Entente Cordiale in time!

HISTORICAL ANECDOTE #8 In May 1903, when Edward VII visited Paris, the French comedy songwriter Paul Lorans brought out an affectionately insulting song about the English King: "Viens Mimile… V’là Edouard" (”Come Mimile... Here comes Edward”) was addressed to French President Emile Loubet (the “Mimile” in the title) and ordered him: "Come and embrace big fat Edward VII” (“Viens presser dans les bras Edouard sept, gros et gras”). The lyrics also imagined Edward being shown around Paris, particularly Montmartre and the rue Chabanais – two red-light hotspots. The Parisian public knew all about Edward’s scandalous visits to the city in the past. Street sellers made a small fortune hawking lyric sheets throughout Edward’s state visit. But the song’s popularity wasn’t down to any aggression that Parisians felt towards Edward or the British – it reminded them fondly of Paris’s heyday of the 1890s, and helped to make the state visit a success. Maybe modern-day politicians could take a leaf out of Edward VII’s and Emile Loubet’s book, and make sure insulting songs are written about them before every state visit?

HISTORICAL ANECDOTE #9 Here below is a piece of article raising information on the visit of Emile Loubet to London and the preparations made for his arrival. We thank the Association Emile Loubet for this historical article fragment. M. LOUBET IN LONDON [From our own correspondent] London, 31st of May It has been confirmed via the court Court Circular that it is indeed on the 18th of July that M. Emile Loubet will arrive in England: he will stay there in all probability for three days, and not four, as it was claimed. M. Loubet will be received in London as no other European Head of State has ever been received before. The city is preparing a triumphant reception for the President of the French Republic. On all sides plans are being made to prepare the most splendid ceremonies in honour of M. Loubet. There is talk of erecting some Arcs de Triomphe in Fleet Street, Ludgate Hill, Cheapside, and on the Paternoster Square. Never before has a foreign head of state been shown such an honour.
