Forrest was up to something. I don’t know to what end, but he was up to something. A few of my thoughts below, mainly along one of my lines of thinking. Recall my recent previous post on partnership, circles, Ode to Peggy Jean.
(1) Partnership, union, marriage, connection. Importance of, for survival while living (Laos and Air Rescue Team; cancer and Peggy team). Importance of, for survival after death (remembrance, memorial; durable mementos: autobiography, bells, jars, treasure chest).
(2) Partnership theme extensively developed in TTOTC. Major message, goal: to enrich others with whom I interact (My War for Me). It is the gypsy magic: I touched them with my eyes and became part of it (Gypsy Magic). It is the totem: we got to be a pretty good team, especially on Frosty’s day off (Totem Café Caper).
(3) Forrest returns to the partnership theme in his flurry of scrapbooks in 2019. These begin on day of the memorial service for his childhood friend Edard (sic) = 9/15/19. SB205. He also returns to objects imbued with magic.
(4) SB209, first observation. Dolls were thrown out and now they suffer amidst the wreckage of failed marriages. Discarded, disunion. By whom? Not Forrest. He can relate somehow: connection with them. Why? They protect him. Return to these observations later.
(5) SB209, second observation. Prose in first few paragraphs draws from the fairy Wikipedia article, sometimes verbatim. Fairies = magical. They have silent fetishes and precious amulets. Gypsy magic, totems, fairies, fetishes, amulets. Same same.
(6) SB209, third observation. One of Cynthia’s pictures. Forrest between and behind dolls. Me in the middle? Surrounding, protecting him. Above and behind Forrest SB210 painting. Acquired from Olga, depicts church with graveyard in foreground = associated with death. Painting hung on wall by portal out of kitchen. Portal = unambiguously recalls SB172 location of bell. SB172 bell seen outside door behind Forrest in picture. SB172 bell associated with memorial, grave. Put together: dolls protect Forrest’s grave. Treasure chest site = would-be grave site.
(7) SB215: business partners, first observation. Partnership theme overt. Mary Lou = short for Mary Louise = homophone marry Louise = business partners. Contrasted with Louise = no Mary in name = no marry. Louise is messy. Perhaps chaotic? Chaos without partnership? Fairy doll Chaos? Chaos suffering amidst the wreckage of failed marriages? Interesting.
(8) SB215: business partners, second observation. I. Misspells enchilada = enchalada. Points out error. Error = makes reader stop and think, per Forrest (e.g. SB179). Misspells complimented = complemented. In context meant former word, not latter. Both misspellings = lose central i. Me in the middle? No I in team, but you can’t spell team without me? Union, partnership, marriage.
(9) SB220: one rule = a benevolent gesture. First handshake. Union, partnership a rule? There are unions: Singer-Fleischaker Oil Company, hitching post, Joe and Richard, Ann and Addie, Singer/Fleischaker oil company, father/son relationship, and Joe and his Paul. How about Addie? Addie: name evokes addition = union, marriage, partnership. Me in the middle? Yes, literally two ways. First: Dean on the right and Joe on the left and Forrest relaxed in the middle. Second: Forrest was the middleman for the deal.
(10) SB222: Addie returns. Evocative name: partnership? Why yes: not only a good friend, but undergoing a bone fusion operation. That all? No. Forrest’s gift of a good luck charm in her hand, literally fused to it with tape. Literal union. Good luck charm = Zuni back fetish. Oh, that again? Gypsy magic, totems, fairies, fetishes, amulets = associated with partnership, team, union.
(11) SB222: Addie, related thoughts. She secludes in the background. Heard through the grape vine about her condition. Did we hear about the grape vine recently? Why, yes! SB218. Forrest tells us it’s hard to see the grape vines growing up wire in the picture, but it’s there just the same. In the background? Secluding? Hidden wires? Sound familiar? Oh yeah, SB209 dolls hidden armature made of spring wire; over which silent fetishes are secreted.
(12) SB221: Us and Mexico Beach. Pair, again. There’s a divide. Title wordplay: between U.S. and Mexico. Plot: between lake and gulf. Who bridges the divide? Forrest. Says as much: Enter me. Forrest drew a thin line linking the lake and gulf. An I-shaped depression, 50’ long. I. Recalls elongated doodle of the Zuni back fetish from SB222. Connection, partnership. And a literal and figurative me/I in the middle. Chaos again? Yes, see photo after Hurricane Michael.
(13) SB219: Partnership, but more. Makes my head spin. Handshakes: recalls gesture of SB220. Totally totaled: recalls Addie of SB222. Forrest and his jeep are a team: overt partnership. More? Crock pots getting low and filling up again: recalls SB221. Recipe for chaos: recalls SB209 doll. Past, pastors, pass, pasta, passed pass: recalls SB209 past middle age, SB222 past middle age. Hats: recalls SB209 dolls, SB213 leaves, SB214 doodles, and SB216 etchings. Closely guarded recipe: recalls idea of rules in SB220 and SB207.
(14) SB207: Note to himself = I am drawn to Mr. Sharp. His cabin was headquarters of a reunion. Unions. Not intact: claw hammer forlorn, cabin felt mistreated. Divided, no union. Gypsy magic, totem? Yes, Forrest giveth. Claw hammer = “thank you” token under the floor, a talisman of sorts. Needs to remain with cabin: partnered. A rule. Not first time: MW Featured Question 1/5/15: jade “slick” good luck charm or amulet found under the floor boards in a long-ago abandoned log cabin. Add to the list: gypsy magic, totems, fairies, fetishes, amulets, good luck charms, tokens, talismans, slicks.
(15) SB229: medicinal mojo necklace. Can’t get more fetish than that. Uber fetish. Fetishes strung together. Partnered? Forrest: the more I studied the beads the more I was drawn into them. No, he didn’t just say that, did he? Oh yes, yes he did. Partnership, union, marriage again associated with gypsy magic, totems, mojo.
(16) SB229: Fetishes strung together. Embroidered? SB209 doll Embroidery. Woven fabrics? Yes. Ball of string tied end to end (Gold and More). Our clew = clue? The mojo necklace bead fetishes delivered information. What else delivers information? A clue. Hmmm. Sure seems like Forrest is getting at something. Partnership = rule, recipe, magic that delivers clues.
Enough for now.
Is it real or imagined? Seems like the threads running through are too great to be coincidental. Next question: intentional or not? It could simply be Forrest’s subconscious talking, his way of thinking, writing. Next question: meaningful? If real and intentional, could Forrest have just been pulling our collective chains? Elsewhere he claims no subterfuge and no intent to deceive. But he does seem like he likes to tease, usually through ambiguity. Head scratcher: email to Dal about being within 300 feet of treasure chest but Jack telling us he can’t rectify the statement with reality.
What do you make of these SB’s? What do you think? Is Forrest telling a story that is useful to solving his treasure hunt?
