Hi everyone,
This is my first post. I saw Josh Gate’s show about the San Francisco casque and was fascinated. I feel like I have a possible solution but have no interest in digging for it. So, I thought I would throw it out to a community who may be interested. Many of you are way more steeped in the hunt than I am - by far. I’m coming in with a novice’s mindset and eye. I saw how the Boston casque was found and it seemed like it was fairly easy if you don’t overcomplicate it. They also seem to be tied to immigrant populations, so here goes my theory:
I think that the verses and the image are identifying it more as Chinatown. The pedestal under the rose looks like a Chinatown lantern and base. The dragon to me is a fairly clear indicator of Chinatown. And the pearl on the woman’s neck is not in the map of Golden Gate if that is what the dress is meant to represent.
The first verse is about a stone wall's door, which I think could be the Dragon's Gate, which locates you there. The air smells sweet could be the fortune cookie factories in the area. In the Japanese version it mentions taste but says it can be in the air. That would be odd to me to not be connected to food. I searched parks in Chinatown and Portsmouth Park came up. I've never been there. I'm only seeing this online. But, the clues seem to fit.
Education and justice for all to see - there is a plaque dedicated to education (the first public school) there. There also used to be a Hall of Justice across the street.
The object of Twain's attention is the monument that talks about Robert Louis Stevenson - he and Mark Twain had a conversation at one point. The sails on that ship's monument look a lot to me like the rose petals in the image. And, the stylized waves at the bottom look a lot like the rocks behind the woman.
High posts are three for all to see and the Japanese version mentions they are wood. There is also a clue about "near ace is high" and "sounds from the sky." I think this refers to the first flag flown there and the sound of it flapping in the wind. The Japanese version mentions the wind. And, right where that monument is are three trees in a triangle pattern. I think that's probably where the casque is kept. The giant pole would have been the flag pole.
The Boston clues had a lot to do with actually identifying the area where the casque was, and I think that's probably the same here. A few clues identifying the general area, and then a bunch more showing you exactly where it is. People seem to be using it to take a walk through the Golden Gate Park, but I think this is talking about exact reference points. Again, just a guess from someone who has never looked for treasure and doesn't have that much interest in doing so.
Maybe this helps someone in the search. To me it makes complete sense. If you do find the casque, please let me know!
