This story very obviously takes place in 1974.
Annie wore the jersey with number 74 on New Years Eve and Day.
February 22 fell on a Friday in 1974.
Perhaps now I am moving in to confirmation bias territory. But this chapter could also read as a racehorse being delivered to the west coast.
Annie was "being delivered" to San Francisco.
She has already made her debut and is making another west coast debut - perhaps a racecourse debut.
If we go with that - why is Friday, February 22 important?
Was there a big race to get to?
