He mentioned "The Bow" and said "no rain?".
And the mention of melon arena immediately made me think of Blind Melon - No Rain.
Maybe there's a song hidden in each chapter.

My Old Kentucky Home by Stephen Foster has been played since the early 1900s at every Kentucky Derby.
Edit: I guess Dan Fogelberg also got on the charts with a song called 'Run for the Roses' in the 1980s. That seems like it might fit better.

I was just throwing the Blind Melon out there not too seriously. But as I was rereading Winterland, it's pretty clear the shop keeper must be blind (doesn't look up or acknowledge, low light, lights off, etc..).
