He mentioned "The Bow" and said "no rain?".
And the mention of melon arena immediately made me think of Blind Melon - No Rain.
Maybe there's a song hidden in each chapter.

My Old Kentucky Home by Stephen Foster has been played since the early 1900s at every Kentucky Derby.
Edit: I guess Dan Fogelberg also got on the charts with a song called 'Run for the Roses' in the 1980s. That seems like it might fit better.

I was just throwing the Blind Melon out there not too seriously. But as I was rereading Winterland, it's pretty clear the shop keeper must be blind (doesn't look up or acknowledge, low light, lights off, etc..). Furthermore, it turns out that Blind Melon was once interviewed by Robert Hunter! Find the fruit = Blind Melon archive.org/details/rappingwithblindmelonroberthunter
