Ok, I’m going to give you my take on the possible location of the NOLA casque.
First off a lot has changed with hurricane Katrina and all but I think enough remains to get me to a probable location.
Remember, the painting is a map and the final casque location is in the centre ( that’s the way I see it). Every object in the painting is depicted in a relationship to one another either north of,south of above or below, to the right or left of etc.
Now you might be thinking, Louis Armstrong park is not by the water. My theory says all parks boarder the water. But it does. If you look at it as a park system then you see that there is a tenuous green pathway that extends all the way from Louis Armstrong park to City park through Storyland and onto the shores of Lake Ponchartrain. The park or park system connects to water . Connecting to water probably has to do with immigration.
You may have to re orientate the map so it matches the painting better if you can’t see what I’m talking about.
Lets look at the checkered background . Again this is a guess that’s all.
It’s probably a depiction of the French quarter neighbourhood. If you look at the lower right side of the painting you see a horses head in one of the squares. That’s probably for the horse you see in Jackson Sq. Which is to the south east of Louis Armstrong Park ( it fits the pattern). What I also find interesting is the fact that the one piece of art work ( abstract sculpture) in the park with the 3 silver balls on top has a checkered pattern like the background in the painting. Makes you wonder where he got the idea since that sculpture is relatively new and supposed to be about the old French opera house.
Next look at the scary hand holding the stick with the white mask( Louis Armstrong face).
The hand represents the St. Louis Cemetery #1 where the Voodoo Queen ( Marie Laveau) is buried now the stick has two meanings. First off it’s directional ( see pic below) points directly to Louis Armstrong statue. Secondly it’s telling you that many tours are at the cemetery so if you have ever been on a tour where lots of other tour companies go then your guide will be carrying a stick with something attached to one end and hold it up in the air so you know where your group is and not get lost.
This is where the verse line namesakes meeting near this site fits in. Namesake by definition essentially means names that are similar but not the same . So you have Louis Armstrong park and St. Louis Cemetery. Two Louis, and the cemetery is near. Or Louis Armstrong park and Louis Armstrong Statue.
Next let’s look at the clock. To me this is what I see. A French grandfather clock possibly Louis the XV ,with the time set to 3 o’clock ( a quarter hour). Summing that up I read it as French Quarter Louis. The 3 also plays a part in the map ( the middle east side entrance into the park( see pic).
Now those that think it’s in Louis Armstrong park think that the top section of the clock is a representation of the Louis Armstrong Arch and I agree. Even the white moon falls in the correct position as the letter “O” in the archway. The stars are the many lights on the arch.
Look at the boy inside the clock. What’s he doing? What’s he wearing? Looks like a news boy swimming. The park opened up about the same time as BP started this hunt 40 years ago so that would be current news. Why is he swimming? If you look at the shape of the canal ( see pic below, I highlighted the section in red),he would fit nicely into this shape, not exact be very close. You even see that bubble butt shape on the north side of the shoreline.
As you may or may not know I like my lines drawn on the painting and on a map. It all makes perfect sense to me and fits.
If you look at the Center point on the painting you see it falls on a shadow on the cheek.
So for location I’m thinking east side of the park. The shadow looks like a birds claw foot or something that has an appearance like that. Problem is lots of recent changes were done because of Hurricane damage so final location may be lost. Another point is that this Center point falls on the Zygomatic arch of the face , the cheek bone,( the part that sticks out). So the terrain in the lower east side of the park is hilly with high sections. Maybe it’s buried on the top of one of these hills. Can’t see the park change that much.
The lines.
You see the green line on the map and painting goes directly in a straight line to Louis Armstrong ( mask in painting and statue on map). The horizontal yellow east to west line in the painting goes perpendicular to the green line in the painting Louis Armstrong statue is the way point. But that intersection is not the location of the casque, The center point on the painting it is east ( to the right) of that , look at the face.
So what’s with the two vertical ( supposed to be vertical if you re oriented the pic of the map). Looking at the painting the yellow vertical line passes directly through the Armstrong arch but it also passes through a section of the boy( the body of water),that doesn’t quite line up. I’m going to go with the line going through the arch.
So now you see the Red line touches the corner of the thumb and on the corner of the cemetery. Extend that line to the Middle East side of the park entrance. The number 3 on the clock.
Now you have a 3 point intersection . This is where I think the casque is located.
On a side note JFK theory . Mahalia Jackson sung at JFKs inauguration. She was thrilled to see JFK intervene and help MLK when he was arrested .
Let’s do the verse now.
First line. It’s NewOrleans, Jewels abound You see latitude and longitude numbers in the painting
Second and Third line are giving you bearings to the dig site much like the Chicago casque. So it might pertain to trees fence post or something solid and the fact that it would be there for a very long time
Fourth and fifth line ( from end to end ,only 3 stand watch),probably pertains to the north and south boundary streets.( there always seem to be a road clue in the puzzle). The 3 roads are St. Philip, St.Ann. and St. Peter. There has to be some religious context in there. Congo Square is part of Louis Armstrong park.
Six and seventh line . As the sound of friends fills the afternoon hours. That pertains to Congo Square where they would meet up in the afternoon. There is a plaque there that essentially spells this out. Yes it appears to be a new plaque but the history doesn’t change.
Eighth Ninth and Tenth line. Here is a sovereign people who build palaces to shelter their heads for a night. Those lines pertain to the rich folk ( look up the definition of Sovereign) who attend evening performances at the Mahalia JACKSON theatre ( one of the way points as well). Now from the Japanese hints some state that those lines refer to to St. Charles hotel. Why would he refer to a tall building in the city when the first line in the verse screams NOLA. Could just be a second confirmation for NOLA or just a way point.
The remaining lines, gnomes admire Fay’s delight the namesakes meeting near this site. Probably pertains to the St. Louis number one cemetery and the Voodoo queen Marie Laveau. Interesting write up about her and the cemetery ( people drew X’s on her grave monument). or it could just pertain to Louis Armstrong park and Louis Armstrong statue ,more likely this, near the statue.
Another thought, even though I think the St Louis cemetery plays a part ,there is the building that sells cemetery tours right by the park on N Rampart st. This could be a way point ( line from the store through the arch) . I kind of doubt he would use this as a landmark, businesses usually don’t last ,solid difficult to move structures do last. Just a secondary thought.
