I thought it might be fun to begin a collection of (possible) public ciphers - that is, words, phrases, symbols, etc. that have been, or still are, seen by the general public but may that have hidden meanings, as opposed to the ciphers that only members of the treasure community see in treasure hunting.
As an example, take the 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey". One of the main "characters" is a computer named HAL, that serves as an artificial intelligence to aid in commanding a spaceship. HAL, with a Caesar shift of 1, becomes IBM, which was a household name synonymous with computers at that time. That's an example of a possible word cipher that a large number of people had seen.
An example of a symbol is the FedEx logo, which contains an arrow in the EX negative space.
A third example (let's call it an amazing coincidence) is the first known human to set foot on the moon. That's NEIL A, which in reverse is ALIEN - which he was no longer on earth.

Liking this. Just got off a Celebrity cruise and while trying to take a break from puzzles was distracted constantly by the Celebrity logo with a big X in the middle of the name. Why an X?

Liking this. Just got off a Celebrity cruise and while trying to take a break from puzzles was distracted constantly by the Celebrity logo with a big X in the middle of the name. Are you talking about this Celebrity, samantha? I would have guessed it meant “X marks the spot for fun” or something like that, but... en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celebrity_CruisesY an X? I like that. Not sure if I posted this to you, but when you were in Chicago for Xavier, did you see the Y municipal markings all around the city? I guess that’s an example of a type of public code or symbol, too. Another ‘rabbit hole’ .. “The “Y” symbol, which represents the three branches of the river as they come together at Wolf Point and separate the north, south, and west sides of Chicago, can be found on structures and buildings all across the city. While prominent on many municipal buildings and street lighting boxes, it can often be found interestingly hidden in the facades of older commercial and industrial buildings.” drloihjournal.blogspot.com/2017/05/chicagos-i-will-motto-and-y-municipal.html
