Interesting image with seemingly three separate parts, all under the general idea of astronomy. Wondering if this puzzle might be a rebus. Brainstorming here:
1) appears to Ptolemy’s universe model where the earth is the center and sun, moon, planets orbit the earth. Symbol in center appears to be earth, and other symbol may be Mars. Not sure what the keyword or central theme is here.
2) Telescope : “scope” “look” “sight” “see”
3) Tucson meteorite - an iron ring : thinking “ring” as ending to the word/rebus. Also possibly “iron” “fe”.
What are everyone’s thoughts? rebus or something else? If a rebus, can we complete it?

Here's a list of symbols for planets. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astronomical_symbolsEarth Orbits Uranus Aperture: Notice there's a round arrow in the lens of the telescope that points to the round opening. Iron Answer: VOWELS Perhaps wolves

I have the image up on my laptop and will glance at it often today to give any thoughts I might come up with.
Some questions I have now though. If Mars, why is the dot circled? Which makes it like the Sun symbol. Is there a trick here? Is it actually the Sun? (sun up/sunrise) - Which if it is, then Earth is third in from it. But why that? And maybe it isn't the Earth - what if it is a bullseye? Taurus?
But if Earth and Mars - the dot looks bold. Why that? Counting up to it: 14 one way, 11 the other. 1411 significant?
Just ideas.
Also on page 40 - Do we agree the answer is Pisces - Pie and Seas?
Which them maybe something with Taurus and Pisces - which are Earth and Water symbols -

The link above has the astronomical symbols since 1850. I'm sure one could come across them at a trip to planetarium. That is Uranus's symbol. Here's a snapshot:

Thanks Choice! I get what you are saying with Vowels/Wolves now. Very good!

Have you noticed that he took Claude (Claudius Ptolemaeus), Bill (William Herschel), Ed (Edwin Hubble), Nickie (Nicolaus Copernicus), and Al (Albert Einstein) to the Planetarium? Thus leaving out Galileo Galilei and Sir Isaac Newton

Hi Nina. Welcome to the discussion!
Yes. It’s an interesting observation. You wonder if the text that precedes these images offer any type of clue to their interpretation.
Not sure what to make of this puzzle. The depiction of earth/orbits and planets doesn’t seem to fit with a known model. Could it be more of an abstract interpretation: “look” (telescope) “around” (orbits) the “ring” (meteorite). … ?treasure site clue
One other possible connection could be to the “zenith of the earth” with the address of the Empire State Building given on page 36.
Jenny- agree with “Pisces” to answer to riddle on page 40. Pisces also in constellations image, Tom’s clue, and page 35. Meaning not entirely clear but authors seem to keep emphasizing it.

Just a few thoughts:-
1. The Diagram does seem to represent the Ptolemy’s universe model, however, it bothers me that Uranus wasn't discovered until 1781 by Herschel.
2. Newton was born in the year Galileo died, 1642. The 2 scientists not on the trip to the planetarium (see earlier comment)
3. Newton and Galileo both famous for laws of motion
4. Galileo famous for improved telescope
I fear I could be going in the wrong direction :-)

Galileo famous for improved telescope I fear I could be going in the wrong direction :-) All discussion is a step in the right direction! Yes. The “universe model” doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense no matter which way you look at it. Mars/Uranus/Sun symbol wouldn’t orbit three away from the earth in Ptolemy model. Either authors missed a detail or we should be thinking more abstract. I like Jenny’s idea of the telescopic lens as the earth symbol or thinking more generally about the diagram. What are they getting at? And how do we combine all three images. I also wonder with ‘1982 resources’ how much background information would be needed to solve this puzzle. If it’s a rebus, do we derive single letters, parts of a word, or full words from the three images?

leaving out Galileo Galilei and Sir Isaac Newton Another possibility: J-10 dots Uranus P-16 dots Iron Telescope Earth R-18 dots M -13 dots Spells out JUPITER M(oons?) The Galilean moons of Jupiter (Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto). Third moon in orbit is Ganymede, which is anagram of Mega Dyne which is unit of force equal to 10 Newton. Bacon anyone?!
