Who, why, what, where, when and how.
Fenn uses The Thrill of the Chase to tell us the who, what and when; the poem reveals the why, where and how.
They work together, but the poem alone gets you to the ending, the location you're to find from the poem. This place is NOT in The Thrill of the Chase book.
Can you solve it without the book, the 'back story' so to speak? Probably, but it's much easier with the book IMO, because the book provides insight into how Fenn thinks about words and phrases. When Fenn says "all you need is the poem" it's telling us that it is within the poem we'll find our way to the chest - the book doesn't have that in it, but it has hints to help with the clues that lead to the chest that are in the poem.

Rahrah, The book has many hints that will aid the searcher but they are not direct. As each day passes I reflect on the words The Poem is telling me. It now represents a wonderful place in my life that I never knew. Once you see what I mean then you will be so surprised and so will everyone else. You wont be able to keep it quiet. Now there are many that discount my interpretation of The Poem. Yet, I only have given a snippet here and there. I could probably tell everyone 90% on how to read the Poem and without that last 10%, they will never find it. Each word in The Poem has its own unique structure. It even tries to misdirect you if your are not careful. The only way is to read the Poem over and over and think. That is it.
I rather take the location of the treasure chest to my grave than announce its location. Hmmm..I should put that in writing to make it official. Now, I shall only teach the young and hopefully plant a good seed. I suppose I would need to water it from time to time but it should last for 1000 years if mankind is to survive that long.
Many unfortunate situations have resulted in searchers demise in recent years. I am sure there is way more unfortunate circumstances than what is reported. None of the these are Forrest Fenns fault. We all make our own decisions in life. It is up to you to find what is best and what will fail you.
Should Forrest end the chase becasue of all the terrible things that has happened? It is up to him and only him. Forrest has a very good heart and at times I am sure it is heavy. What I dont understand why some people dont heed his words about danger.
Now hear it from me. The clues are not in a dangerous place. There is no special equipment needed to look for the clues. Plan ahead and do your research before you head out.
