I still feel like we don't have a definitive answer on whether it is hidden in Acadia or not. I know he said we don't have to break any laws to find it, and others have said it's illegal to hide anything in Acadia.
But, if you think about it, he never said that HE didn't break any laws when he hid it. And if we find it in Acadia without digging, are we really breaking any laws? It isn't illegal to find something that someone else illegally hid.
He also said that it is on public land. Is a national park considered public land or private land?
It's documented somewhere on tweleve that someone asked him flat out, is it hidden in Acadia? And his answer was "it is not on private land." But again, a little vague. Is Acadia private or not?
My gut feeling is that it is not in Acadia, but...it would be nice to have a solid answer on that.
--I wonder if Pel ever reads any of these posts. If he does, he's probably laughing his head off at some of the rabbit holes here and on tweleve.

I agree. I think it doesn't matter whether its hid in Acadia or not, because the treasure itself is not there. What is there is a key to a security deposit box along with a set of instructions. That key is used to open a security deposit box which then gives you instructions to retrieve the treasure. Acadia was purchased by the pioneers of MDI but it was made available for the public. My take is as long as its on someones actual private property, its game on. IMO I think we are looking for a 4 digit lockbox nailed to a tree or rock, or its a fake rock that holds the key

Could be. I do a lot of letterboxing. It could just be a tupperware container under a rock somewhere. The reason I don't think it's a lockbox is he said in the podcast interview a few years ago that if someone stumbles upon it by accident without ever having read the book, they could claim the treasure. If it had a combo, that wouldn't fly. He's also said it's hidden, which makes me think it's under something you have to move, like a rock.
Sigh...I really want to find this thing! Closely followed by, I really want someone to find this thing.
The funny thing is, I think Pel didn't anticipate it would be so hard to solve. In one of his interviews, he said he planned to do a new hunt every year, implying he thought this would be solved within a year.

Wait, > That key is used to open a security deposit box which then gives you instructions to retrieve the treasure.
I didn't interpret it that way. What I got from the instructions was, the safe deposit box contains the treasure itself.

@susb83 You are correct. I just looked the back of the book after staring at the Hidden Away page for an hour. The actual treasure is in a deposit box. I feel ya. I got into this a couple of months ago and have been pretty hardcore. Want to solve it bad. Just seems there haven't been any big breakthroughs for quite a few years. It dead ended at the star words. PM me if you wish. wouldn't mind a partner in crime that is honest. Did i Just say that? That came out very foxey;)

I spoke with someone at Acadia Headquarters and she told me it is a federal offense to intentionally hide or leave anything in Acadia. She was very upset that I even suggested someone might have done this and told me to have them remove it immediately. It is against the law to participate in any type of geocaching or treasure hunting in the park, she said, because no matter the 'rules of the game' people violate park rules and do terrible damage to the park by digging holes, going off trail and destroying fragile plants and undergrowth. She made it clear that both hiding something and/or participating in a hunt is against the law. So go for it if you are willing to take the chance on doing some jail time and paying a couple hundred thousand dollars in fines (I think she said $200,000).
Having said that, is is possible that the 'key' we are looking for is a landmark, memorial or plaque that is in the park? Not something placed or to be removed (because really, how could they be sure everything would remain the same for 13 years?), but maybe a statement on a plaque or a sign, or some rock shaped like a fox.. that 'tells' us where the real key is. Maybe the key itself is 'verbal and visual' and is something to be seen and read, not physically picked up. I know we are looking for a key to a safety deposit box, but maybe it's just at the bank and we need to find the password that will allow them to release it to us.
