The provenance probably doesn't matter, but the stories searchers tend to associate with the Bozeman Daily Chronicle first appeared in print in the West Yellowstone News.
The Chronicle picked them up later (and still hosts them online, obviously).
(But for those who argue that TTOTC was just a little book written only for Forrest's family and friends in Santa Fe, because "obviously" he hid the chest in northern New Mexico, it might be worth thinking about why Forrest published these stories in West Yellowstone in 2008, about fifteen years after he decided to hide a treasure chest, about thirteen or fourteen years after he started writing the poem, about a year and a half before he went ahead and hid the chest, and about two years before he decided to write that little book.)
