If the 5-sided shape in image 2 is a fort (like many believe) what are the theories on what makes up the eyes?
They look like flat head screws to me.
I also found a 1700s protractor at a Charleston museum that is proportioned a lot like it.
Here's one similar to what I found.

I had many thoughts on them ranging from coin slots to VW bug split rear window. I like protractors cause it implies importance of 'angle'. Looking at the Fort Sumter mask I noticed it's slightly rotated counter clockwise. Then the wire that it's hanging off of is split into two. Then on the map of Charleston, the area of the WPG is surrounded by a pair of wires running parallel. I took that as a clue to line up those two lines with the Sumter lines. That means rotating the Sumter clock counter-clockwise so the minute hand with white point at it's tip is pointing towards WPG. Doing so makes the hour hand point towards the Sullivan's lighthouse. With all the gold color and possible VW bug hint I'm almost convinced we must look at something Poe related i.e. museum or library. Interestingly in 1977 Poe's library was moved to Fort Gadsden. Note the teeth on the front facade. The library is literally embedded in sand. Also the lighthouse close at hour hand. pinkmonkey.com/dl/library1/gold.pdf

The alchemists symbol for salt is a circle with a horizontal line through it. I have mentioned earlier that the Greek letter Theta is an oval with a line across it and is the eighth letter of the Greek Alphabet. I do think the eyes represent the 2 plaques to right of the double stairs. I believe Palencar created these unusual images by pulling together all the objects in an area and combining them into one object or group of objects.
by the way goldhunter, the Navigators Protractor is a good find. I have not seen those before, only the half circle type.

choice...I like your triangles.
xmarksdspot...I like the theory of the mouth triangles being multiple objects combined.
Thanks, folks, for the extra thoughts.

Go look at the “1”s painted on Battery Bingham #1 at Fort Moultrie....dead ringer for the eyes you are asking about. If someone with more tech savvy than me can post the two side by side that would be much appreciated.

The hole in a fortified wall that a cannon shoots through is called an embrasure. If the eyes were open they would look like embrasures. Maybe the word embedded is a clue to embrasure. It would all be about cannons if that were true.
