If I'm reading and understanding correctly, the "hunt" started Feb 2, 2003.
I've not gotten anywhere with this. Or at least I can't follow it to a location.
There seem to be several themes running throughout the book:
1) As mentioned in other threads, horse racing, roses, and the Grateful Dead show up in a few places.
2) I see puerile jokes and dirty-sounding phrases peppered throughout the stories.
3) I also see the story, perhaps in a one-day timeframe, of bingeing and debauchery (whatever word you want to use) with references to sex, drugs, and rock and roll.
4) I think I can also see the story that mirrors the lyrics in 'Forty-Eight States' with references to guitars, spotlights, speakers, engagement, debut, tour, historic event at a grand palace, and so on.
5) I believe the references to father and grandfather are based on Duck's real-life family and their interests, accomplishments, or occupations.
If I were to take a wild, wild guess - it would be based on the following:
The inner cover map, the dedication, groundhog's day, and some story settings point to Pennsylvania.
The puerile jokes and dirty-sounding phrases suggest Duck is going with a location that sounds dirty.
'Bare the Cross' may reference a crossing or intersection.
The theories for the name of this location are: An old racetrack was once located east of the village. The entrance to the track was referred to as “Entercourse,” which could have gradually became Intercourse. or The town may have been named after its location at the intersection — or "intercourse" — of roads known today as routes 340 and 772.
Thus, my guess is that the key (if there is a physical key) may be found somewhere in the vicinity of Intercourse, PA.
