I believe like some , that everything in the verse applies to something that you can see by the park/ dig site. Not only that but the lines in the verse if they mention something in the north in the beginning then at or near the end of the verse it will also mention something that is in the north as well. I’m basing this on the 1st 3 casques that were found and the locations of the other casques based on my theories.
Chicago: “Where M and B are set in stone” ( music hall 220 Michigan Ave.), “Hush,” ( probably the museum ) both to the north of the dig site
Cleveland: “Beneath ( south) two countries as the road curves, Seek the columns For the search” . Both the Columns and the curved road are north of the dig site
Boston:” If Thucydides is North of Xenophon, In truth ,be free.”
We know that Thucydides was a historian who was after the truth and freedom, while Xenophon was also for freedom and wrote a constitution, ( hint for the USS Constitution ship), Both north of the dig site. In this verse he uses the line,” with your back to the stairs”which indicates the stairs are to your south while you face the water which is north.
The rest of the sites are all theory
Quebec City ( Montreal):” Lane Two twenty two You’ll see an arc of lights “, (Rue St. Louis arched gate) ,” Get permission to dig out” ( my guess is go to City hall and get permission). Both are north of the dig site.
NewYork:”In the shadow of the grey giant”( Maritime Memorial slab of grey granite), “Or gaze north toward the isle of B.” The way the Maritime Memorial is laid out the slab with the arm extending across the slender path would be north of the dig site. The isle of B ( Bowling green park) is north of the dig site.
Roanoke:” Pass two friends of octave, Look north at the wing and dig.” Now we assume that those two friends are the Wright Brothers and the Wing that one gazes upon is the Wright Brothers memorial wing . Both references are essentially one and the same and north of the dig site. But… octave is not capitalized like a proper given name should be. Could octave reference music? Paul Green was into music , was Albert Bell a friend of music? he was a friend of Paul Green. Pass could also mean to go past them. That last line, “Your goal”, some might think of a sporting event that involves a goal , but what does one have do to achieve a goal…. They have to “Score”. Paul Green wrote the play and Score , ( Symphony), for the “The Lost Colony”.
Charleston: “Of all the romance retold Men of tales and tunes Cruel and bold Seen here By eyes of old., White House close at hand.“ First several lines refer to the Stede Bonnet pirate monument north of the dig site , White House close at hand referring to the Washington house on the north side of the park
St.Augustine: “The first chapter Written in water, Years pass, rain falls.”The sign saying “ First Chapter written in water” is north of the dig site as well as the Years pass, rain falls ( Fountain of Youth ticket office) north.
NOLA: “ At the place where jewels abound, Fifteen rows down to the ground, The namesakes meeting near this site.”
Where jewels abound could refer to NOLA itself or the streets that are named after jewels north of Louis Armstrong park or the following line about the fifteen rows ( fence), is north of the dig site .the namesakes meeting near this site being the statue of Louis Armstrong which is North of the dig site.
Houston: “Fortress north Cold as glass, Looking back from the treasure ground.” So the Fortress ( Planetarium) and the treasure ground are north. Since you have to look back, ( look south like the Boston verse), then the treasure ground is north of the spout ( drinking fountain) and north of where the train crosses the foot path and the whistle sounds.
San Francisco: Now this one is a bit different.
“At stone wall’s door The air smells sweet.” This starts South of the dig site since one has to go across and north to to to the object of Twain’s attention. I’m going to surmise that one has to take a giant step in a southerly direction away from the giant pole , ( giant sequoia), to get to the casque. This would keep with the verse theory that if one starts south then you end up going south or southerly.
Milwaukee: “View the three stories of Mitchell, On a proud tall fifth” . The Michell bldg. is north and the #5 picnic post is north of the dig site. So the treasure is south of it , what ever “ it” is , it could be the #5 post, ( proud tall fifth), or the “it” could be a drainage grate that once was or is south of the #5 post since the image of the jewel in the painting is below or “south” of the drawing of the drainage pipe. Also the word foot in the verse initially talks about the foot of a culvert so one might assume when the latter line talks of the southern foot then this might refer to a drainage grate where water enters and leads to Ravine Rd.
