"No Seeker, The poem is straight forward with no subterfuge in sight." Did he ever say TTOTC has no subterfuge? I was thinking the same thing. And even with the poem, the subterfuge wouldnt be in sight, by definition.

Wouldn't ONLY showing a map of New Mexico be a bit misleading? (Please know just trying to get pros and cons for such).... Fifth, I have never consciously misled any searcher or privately given a hint or clue I thought would help someone find the treasure.

. I think showing the map of New Mexico is misleading if the treasure is not in New Mexico. There may be a hidden meaning to the map that could mean a different state but on the surface it will still be misleading to show that map. Since this is a puzzle where things are not necessarily as they appear to be I’m not sure that’s a bad thing. I’m sort of on the fence about that.
There are other things I think that have been said which on the surface are misleading but may be truthful deeper down.
”never consciously mislead any searcher” ... don’t know how I feel about that.

I think subterfuge, trickery and misleading have negative connotations whereas a riddle, puzzle, word play, hiding in plain sight etc. are all fair game, especially in a treasure hunt. They are all intentional but one is to purposefully mislead and deceive and the others are to conceal for purposes of the game being played.

I don't think it's misleading, just part of the puzzle.

One could argue that any statement not leading to the treasure is misleading in a way.

Which is more misleading? Having one old, blurry map of New Mexico in TTOTC and hiding the treasure in Wyoming, or having umpteen chapters mentioning Yellowstone, and hiding the treasure in New Mexico? What if you favor Colorado? Perhaps you do precisely because it's the only state out of the four that he doesn't explicitly mention in TTOTC. So is *that* misleading?
I don't think this is a case of Forrest misleading anyone, but rather searchers misleading themselves.

I don't think it's misleading, just part of the puzzle. Love that thought...... just a background..... a decorative feature, like the postmarks, for the book..... Which anything in the book could be a 'hint' or might not be..... Forrest mentioned somewhere (don't have the quote handy) that the hints in the book are a mystery..... As Zap said, searchers mislead themselves..... those so convinced they 'know' are often those the most misled....

. Heres another example which could. Be said to be misleading. There have been quite a few discussions over this quote by forest over the years since he made it and I think he is relying on people to misinterpret what he said, which causes confusion “The treasure is still there” Compare to the quote that was just made in another thread and other quotes like it which seem to indicate that he doesn’t know that indulgence hasn’t been found mysteriouswritings.proboards.com/post/45839 I do believe forest is being truthful but only when you understand his perspective

The term misleading does have some negative tone to it.... like goldilocks mentioned.... and I probably shouldn't have used it.... I was more or less wondering what everyone's thoughts were on placing a map of New Mexico in the book. Did you feel it's placement suggested the treasure was in New Mexico? or not?
And it can't be taken in isolation, or without consideration of all things involved.
It always surprises me that Forrest never expected the hunt to be what it is today....... not even what it was in 2013..... This we know from his answer to the first Six Questions BEFORE the Today appearance, when it really took off.
I realize so much of the book talks about the areas around Yellowstone, and currently I have a solution for that area, so I suppose I am trying to find reasons for it to be wrong....
One of which is the map of New Mexico in a book Forrest felt hardly anyone would read......
