How far is a walk? 

Well, everyone knows a walk gets you to first base.  So what is past first base but also not far?  Second base.   Second base is a distance that is both not far and too far to walk. 

For confirmation of this answer, far is double-stated in the line, indicating a double distance.  The doubling is emphasized by too (two) and to (two).  Second base is of course where a batter stops for a double.

Going through my Chase notes and found..Joe E Brown was an actor/comedian who played a member of St Louis Cardinals (Dizzy Dean's team) in his movies...and grew up in Toledo btw. In SB 198 high chopper (ball that bounces high), walk, asterisk - to be given one in baseball isn't a good thing. I know also the baseball diamond has been talked about. Blazer and whotrollsnigh are you thinking there was a baseball connection just curious and not that it matters anymore
