So why not call the polo field a giant pole?

The bbi theory is solid except that “giant pole” for Pine Street is actually “giant pull” for the cable car being pulled up the California Street hill. Don’t go to the south side of St. Mary’s Square where you can’t see squat, stay on the north side where you can see everything. The tower of the Bay Bridge being framed between the buildings is a nice touch as well.

You can also interpret pole as "+" as in polarity. Yin yang, plus and minus. Giant "+", giant cross. Also I don't like "running north but 1st across" as 1st a cross. That line defines the diagonal position of building from the site.. North then across the street.

Now everyone has a theory and until the casque is recovered then all theories have potential. This is just my theory and the way I see it. I try to keep it simple. With my theory you could probe that area quite easily and if it’s not there then move on. The problem I have are the number of steps that people take to get to the meaning of each line. To go from giant pole to giant pull to cable car etc. Onestep away is OK but two or more then it gets a bit sketchy to me . I doubt anyone is going to think of cable cars or cables when you mention “giant pole “ to them. The way I interpret the lines are that the “Giant pole “is the object of Twain’s attention.

If you don’t like “giant pull” there is still a “giant pole” at the corner of California and Quincy in the form of the Emergency Warning Siren.
As for water being important, yes it is, but only in the sense that the cities are located on major water bodies. When it comes to the actual burial site they don’t have to be right on the water. The fact of the matter is that the Cleveland casque was more than a mile from Lake Erie. In the case of Old St. Mary’s Cathedral it’s less than a mile from San Francisco Bay so you can’t dismiss it as being “too far from water” when the Cleveland casque was further.

That giant pole would make more sense, so where is the casque? As far as the cultural gardens in Cleveland goes . If you look on Google earth you will see the actual park extends to the shoreline of Lake Erie. The casque could be miles away from the shoreline , but some section of the park is close to the waters edge. I’m a believer that all the parks boarder water ( might have something to do with immigration). So far the first three parks boarder water. Also I believe that your final destination is clearly depicted in outline in each of the paintings, could be large, small, coloured or not but the overall shape is there.

The siren was offered as sounds from the sky. Church bells fit too. As to where the cask is; did you read the pdf completely?

( flower beds are ruled out). Has anyone probed that spot? Is that location on private property? or is it part of the park? The part about sounds from the sky is that in the Japanese hints he seems to dwell on sounds you can’t hear like maybe radio signals? could be wrong, there are plenty of early warning sirens around, anyones guess.

I consider flower bed being directly in the ground. That's a planter similar to Greek cultural Garden.

This one is for Bronco memo and the cross. First off I don’t think that the prayer cross is a giant pole but then again I will keep all options on the table and an open mind. The prayer cross maybe just a clue to the park itself like the so called strawberry image but it could have a deeper meaning.
Yes there is a Hugh cross in the painting. One might even conclude that the cross is on top of the tree bark in the painting . So where do we see a cross in real life? You could say the cross is an X like X marks the spot. You see crosses associated with churches. You see a few crosses along the sides of highways and roads where a death occurred, in some cemeteries and on some religious necklaces etc. All of these crosses symbolize one thing and that is death but primarily the cross symbolizes the death of Christ. So what actually had to die when Christ was crucified? Two physical living things, Christ died and the wooden tree that was made into a cross died. This might be how the cross ties into this treasure hunt as the death of the giant sequoia tree ,cut down and put on display for all to see. This is the way I interpret the Cross.

Google Mark Twain and cross! There is a connection.
The cross is referred to as a tree and also a pole! Preiss loved his synonyms!!!
High posts are 3 sounds like a cross!!!
Sounds from the sky is rainbow falls near the cross.
Ace is high is 1 highway headed north through Golden Gate Park but first “ across”! We shouldn’t ignore the obvious and should keep the solve simple.
In the painting the arms and dragon design form a cross!
Hope someone digs this up soon!!!

Sorry but I tried Googling Mark Twain and Cross but cross dressing Mark Twain came up . I’m sure that’s not the web site to checkout. Regardless, your second line basically confirms my theory of tree and pole tied to Twain. In the Japanese hints it’s mentioned that the “ high posts are three” are wooden. The only problem that I have with the prayer book cross is that it is made of stone or concrete and not wood and not cylindrical like a pole. In old photos it appears to be positioned on bare rock or a large concrete slab. So if there is soil around it now then it might not be sufficiently deep to hide a casque. Just a possibility. Someone may have probed this area already, don’t know. The pic shows the base of the cross. My guess on the length of a giant step would be 3 to 4 feet but in what direction, regardless it would still be under the slab or not there in the first place. link

I would like to thank Woodford for his column “ What’s the Point ?”. Although the assumptions are interesting in the write up ,it’s the fact that the obvious was there and I didn’t even see it. The word AX is spelled out going down and across ( flip the image)… Back home we spell it AXE. What better hint does one need when it comes to chopping a tree down like the Sequoia. Mind you they probably used a crosscut saw to cut a tree down that size but it still gets you thinking in the right direction.
Another far fetched possibility, ( not that it matters a whole lot), is that the verse line “ running north but first across “ might apply ( symbolically to the two words ,AX). as a clue to look for something in the painting that’s going up and across or even the fact that when cutting a tree DOWN you need to cut ACROSS the tree first. Probably the character most people associate with Mark Twain, is Tom Sawyer. Now the last name of this individual derives etymologicaly speaking from Sawyer ,an individual who saws wood. This again could be a subtle hint for the tree.

Why did JJP include his initials at 5 o'clock when he already signed his full name? Here's a possible explanation. The name Quincy (street name), from Latin Quintus meaning fifth. John Quincy Adams was the 6th president. So one word covers both 6 o'clock and 5 o'clock initials.
