Wasn’t she reincarnated as a Redwood tree by Spreckels lake with a casque at her feet? ….. or was it 6 feet away🤔

Yes, the light of the moons revealed a beautiful pearl below the water, and when she tried to grab it, the water spirit dragons threw her to shore and turned her into a tree. legend has it, on the full moon night in June, you can hear her faint cries in the evening sky.

Looking at the upside-down picture of the dragon's head, the bill of the hat looks like a horn. Both bill and horn are synonyms for peninsula. I like that lone tree in the peninsula by the lake that is paved over now. Matches the eye of the yin yang and your folklore. It's also shown in the 1981 GGP map.

I liked that peninsula too, and was disappointed about the concrete. Google maps looks like someone jackhammered a hole of two there... hmmm. Maybe there was a tree planter there at some point. Another thing I can ask the Yaht club about.

And so the story goes, the angry water dragon placed her soul inside a casque and kept it buried at her feet, to be trapped forever unless a brave warrior can solve the riddle, unlock the casque and release her spirit so that she may returned to human form once again.

No evidence of a planter in 1980 or 82. Just the tree. They most likely poured concrete around the tree to form a circular basin shown from the scarring today.

After a little digging online I am discovering that, like many great legends, there is a dark side to the story. It turns out from what I can piece together, once Liu saw the pearl she discovered it was lodged in a slumbering water dragon's eye socket, snatched it out, and jumped to shore knowing that the dragon could not leave the confines of the water. Before the dragon could beg for it's eye back, she attempted to swallow the pearl. Unfortunately for her she did not realize that the pearl was cursed and The dragon's curse could cross land. As soon as the pearl crossed her throat, her soul was swallowed into a casque and she was transformed into a tree. The legend states that if someone can solve the riddle and, although she made a terrible mistake, prove to the dragon that her intentions were pure, then and only then can she be set free.

I found it interesting that some think that sections of the image of the fence in the book shows the dig spot for each casque. This is my interpretation for San Francisco. Now it’s possible to move the orange lines and even make a better fit. Try the historic images site for a 1982 view.

More food for thought. If San Francisco and NewYork city are the bookends then the other end of the fence should represent the park in NYC. Is the finial on the top of the fence a compass heading ie. North Do the two spheres below the finial represent bearings?

Interesting thought. Have you seen the image from the Japanese release ? Eg with the ship, shovel and map? I haven't seen many discussions about that image, but I can't help think there's clues in there too.

Will need to check that out. OK I’ll take a stab at it, some bias might prevail in an interpretation of the image.

I was sure Dicey was going to say the map was of a cut tree with rings and the triangular wedge points to the side of the tree stump. Oh well!

Might be stumped but, no tree stump here. Refined my theory above.
I guess one could call them rings ,(Bell) of a tree ,(the message carved into the tree by the lost colony). Long shot

The creature has strange leaves for hair, seems like a possible tree related clue along with the tree rings. His neck has a strange pattern, like tree bark. What type of leaves/bark is that? maybe if we can identify the species, it can narrow down a location.
