It would seem that the waning moon would fit considering Fenn's older age and previous cancer diagnosis. If this was his intent, it really is quite brilliant.
wane1 wān/ verb gerund or present participle: waning (of the moon) have a progressively smaller part of its visible surface illuminated, so that it appears to decrease in size. synonyms: decline, diminish, decrease, dwindle, shrink, tail off, ebb, fade (away), lessen, peter out, fall off, recede, slump, flag, weaken, give way, wither, crumble, evaporate, disintegrate, die out; literaryevanesce "time-lapse photography shows the moon waning" (especially of a condition or feeling) decrease in vigor, power, or extent; become weaker. Maybe this is an aberration.
Check this out:
Waning is the opposite, or decreasing after a full moon, and is always illuminated on the left. Then, there is a waxing or waning Gibbous moon, which means more than half of the moon is illuminated. And then a waxing or waning Crescent Moon, when less than half is illuminated.
Maybe you both are correct. Waxing or waning gibbous moon. gibbous? Does that sound like something else?

I'm partial to the moon, it must be a wolf thing.

The waning moon is left sided, the waxing moon is right sided (growing) just like the one with the "axe man". Maybe we should call me the "wax-man" - the "wane-man" does have a nice ring it since it is autism month. (Wane-man - Rainman - I crack me up! ;-)

It's easy to tell a waning moon, intuitively you can't miss it.

Might want to get your facts straight there Mr. Wizard, before you try and label people. I would Imagine one who is earning their Masters in Physics would have already known this. Seannm Actually my remark had the physics part 100% correct. It was the axe-man illustration I had reversed. I had to go by memory, since some prophet convinced me to burn my copy! But I must admit it was a religious experience. lol

Sean, and think about it related to today's "Featured Questions" too. mysteriouswritings.com/featured-question-with-forrest-fenn-and-the-thrill-of-the-chase-treasure-hunt-walk-away/In Africa they were wondering why young bull elephants were killing rhinoceros until they realized that all the old bull elephants had been killed by poachers. That left the young bulls without learned guidance. And "learned" is the right word, I think, because elephants are one of the few species on earth that recognize themselves in a mirror. Then others realized this is the same thing that was happening, in effect, in our inner cities. That was quite a few years ago, and I am sensing a change being affected. Gradual, but growing. But that's not the only story related, and we have much to do as a society.

Mr. Fenn offers sage advise in his stories no doubt. One in particular is when Mr. Fenn strafed a funeral and he wept in his oxygen mask when he realized what he had done. Can you imagine doing something like that to someone's funeral? The story of the Vietcong prisoner and the shoes made of tires linked to his message that we need to learn to leave others alone is heartfelt and experienced.

I can imagine it through my friend who also faught in vietnam (and was interestingly enough shot down twice, injured both times, second time with a bullet to the head). Sometimes when we would have a few beers down at the Firehouse after playing cards, he would start thinking and talking as if he was back in the war. It was very strange, he would get very emotional and cry as he described killing even women and children (you had to, kids would be loaded with grenades and sent to run at the soldiers, same with women). He would just stare into space saying "damn, all those people I killed". I would just pat him on the back and try to change the subject. He was younger than Fenn, born in 1943 I think. He was a helicopter gunner, he would hang out and shoot as the helicopter swung in low. He came out in the early 70's after being shot the second time. Through his life he suffered from various lung issues and from his war injuries. He died 2 years ago, he is in a better place now. I am glad that he lived nearby and strangely when I moved to FL he ended up being in the same town as me (I did not know it, lost touch with him when he moved). I helped him out a lot up to the end of his life.

Wolf, As a former pilot, I don't believe you meant to use the literal meaning of the word "strafe" as in the sense that Forrest repeatedly attacked either with bombs or gunfire, but instead just flew over, in very close proximity to the funeral. ------- Semantics, I know, but still word choice is key. Seannm Well if you believe that word choice is key, then please allow me to correct your assumption; I am not a "former" pilot. When FF was Aid de Camp he was still a pilot - no difference.

Wolf, Yes I guess the same can be said that there are no "former" Marines. Seannm I don't think it is registering Sparky. Just because a pilot is on a ground tour doesn't make them "former." They can always come back and fly as a pilot, thus they are pilots whether currently in a cockpit or not. These are the same kind of assumptions that creep into the chase and make for bad decision making down the road. Thanks for reminding us how this can happen.
