TREASURE HUNT #3: Squid Game by The Art of Hidden Messages
Prize The winner receives a hand-made kraken amethyst brooch. The amethysts came from Africa. The eyes are a blue cubic zirconium. The setting is sterling silver (stamped 925 on the back) with black rhodium and rose gold plating. The gems and setting total weight is 8.7 g. I will also send you the pages with the pen and ink drawings and the illuminated letters (watercolor) that I used to create this hunt. The value is approximately $75
Type Fully Armchair
Special Instructions This is a Norse tale about a small hamlet and a sea monster. It is an armchair treasure hunt, there is no need to go boots on the ground. If you follow the story and clues on the parchment, you will have to answer one question. You may be asked to explain the steps of how you arrived at your solution. No knowledge of the show, "Squid Games" is required, however, google will help with some of the puzzle. The answer is not a kracken, so don't even bother to try that one!
Contact Info Answers are to be emailed to TheArtofHiddenMessages@gmail.com Please put in the email Subject Line, "Squid Game"

I was asked how the answer should be formatted when it is sent in via email. You are turning in an answer to a question. You can see the one question right on the parchment. All you need to do is send in the answer to that one question. Just put "Squid Game" in the subject heading of the email. In the body of the email, you can put what your answer is, and your name.
I can't promise to get back to everyone. I will certainly try. If you don't hear from me, your answer is not correct. If you do have a correct answer, I will reply. Replies will be made as soon as possible. If more than one person has the correct answer, the person with the earlier time stamp on their email will be declared the winner.

If you don't hear from me, your answer is not correct. I just have one suggestion, if I may, and that is to reply with "That answer is not correct" if it isn't, or even just "Your submission was received." It's not unheard of for an email to just get lost in cyberspace, and it would be a shame for someone to submit the right answer but not win just because their email got lost. At least if they never got any reply at all they would know their email didn't go through and they could resubmit.
I've definitely had emails that just vanished before; no bounce back and not lurking in a spam folder. It happens.

In the past, I think I have replied to every single email I have received. But I work at a real job. I have a family and 2 cats. I have chores and normal things to do too. You would be suprised at times how many emails a creator might get in response to their hunt. At times it is overwhelming. So I just put that in there in case I get swamped with answers. I don't think you need to worry...

I have been asked if a short answer is okay. Yes. A short answer is fine.
In the rules it reads, "You may be asked to explain the steps of how you arrived at your solution". The reason that is there is unfortunately because people try to take shortcuts. There could be a lot of different ways people take shortcuts. Maybe they didn't purchase the hunts and make an awesome donation to charity and someone else gave them the answer. Maybe they are just spamming me with guesses. Regardless, they didn't do the work and don't deserve to win. So I reserve the right to find out if they did indeed solve the puzzle.
Don't let this scare you. I can usually tell who has been working out the puzzles. You don't have to give a long answer. But if you want to, you can.

Everyone is sooooo quiet... I don't know if that means people are making progress and just keeping it to themselves, or if everyone is just totally lost. I offered a hint above. The hint addressed a few things, actually. But if people are stuck on a certain part, what part would that be? I can possibly try to give a hint to move things along... Post what part of the scroll you would like some help with. I'll see what I can do!

I'm personally completely lost. I was able to manipulate the hint image to get text out but then I again still don't know what to do with the text.
I'm assuming the runes are where you start but those just aren't valid runes. Maybe they need manipulated the way the hint image was? OK, then that takes some valid runes and makes them invalid and some invalid become valid... only manipulate some? I don't know how'd I'd systematically choose.
I've resorted to just doing research based on the story and have come up completely blank. The crazy part is in my brain I remember watching a cartoon depicting something not exactly the same but very similar. I cannot find that. I think I've probably manufactured that memory at this point after reading the story so many times.
I'm trying to decide if there's something hidden somewhere that I haven't found or if I'm just not good enough at research.

I'll throw out an interesting thing I noticed. The text within the (scissors handle?) was not printed from the same version of the pdf that we got. Text was shifted to fit within the opening it seems.
Tells me that the text we see is important. Just no clue what it's supposed to lead you to. Did hours of googling without anything definite showing up

Have the runes and think I understand what the numerals are referencing based on that but not sure where to go from there/what exactly is needed there. The little black squares I can't figure out at all!

But then when she laid it out in the final puzzle she adjusted the margins to accommodate the runes.
