Gotta chew on that. I was thinking the tentacle numbers meant that a single slot was supposed to show O, then C, C, W.

The tentacle numbers work on a different paragraph than the rectangles.

Oh man. I thought my dog was loud, but I've been barking up the wrong tree for some time now!

Ok, I get the tentacle numbers! It seems so obvious now. My line of reasoning had been:
Since a tentacle points to each of the black boxes, the boxes represent four tentacles. There are four elements to each of those numbers, so that went along with four boxes. The numbers go along with tentacles three and four as indicated.
So I kept trying to fit a round tentacle into a square hole.

Oh man. I thought my dog was loud, but I've been barking up the wrong tree for some time now! I only know of one cipher that begins with O. And that happens to use a format very similar to the numbers. So that must be it. But I'm stuck at this one tree and can't stop barking.

The result didn't jump out at me as being anything, but at least it looked like a real word and not just random letters. So if I ever figure out the rectangles it will probably make sense.

So you got an actual word? Or just something that looks like it could be a word? My issue is that any idea I can think of will give me one of two possibilities (I'm certain neither of these can be correct, thus my dilemma): 1) I will get 2 words out 2) or, I will get a two letter word out What I want is to wrap my brain around a way to get either a 6 letter or 8 letter word out but there's no interpretation of the "O" cipher that I know that can do that. At least none that I haven't already tried and failed.

The tentacles give you a four letter word. (PLWLL where P=O) The rectangles give you an eight letter word. (Eight letters sort of set up like the hint shows.)
Both of these words are not used much today.
Since I have given the hints, there are quite a few people who have solved these two steps. And there were people who had previously solved the runes.
There are also people who are making other connections...

Anyone end up making sense of the Roman numerals?

WE HAVE A WINNER!
I will announce the winner tomorrow after they get back to me with details.
And I will also post the full solution tomorrow.
But you can all freely discuss the hunt and what parts you have solved.
Congratulations.

This is my first experience with armchair hunts like this and was so excited when I found...I found...!!!!! .... your signature, lol. This might be unintentional, but when I decoded this part, I got Art of Hidden MesNages
Which may have just been an indication that the runes need to be turned upside down (N where it should have been S, like north and south).

I'm assuming the runes are where you start but those just aren't valid runes. These runes were really hard to find for me! I know what Mike means when he thought they weren't valid runes. Even knowing that they needed to be flipped, I just couldn't find the one that looks like a Y with the dot. None of the wiki pages I saw had that particular rune. I checked Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and tried a google image search for just that one. It wasn't until Namtabeht posted that file that it showed up. I see now that wiki page had that symbol under the right side bar, but not on the main chart. I must just have missed that.

Can't wait to find out about those roman numerals. Somehow it must decode to "intended" or "for" or some synonym of that.

I believe the black squares are for cutting or poking through to focus on the text beneath if you fold the pages together. More barking on my part: I spent so much time trying to fit the cutout holes onto the page so that the actual letters from the first hint matched. The first letter looked like an M to me so I missed TURN PAGE, I even typed the text into a document so I could easily find the two occurrences where GE appeared. Then when I eventually got the intent of the hint, I still couldn't come up with anything. I found WIRE BAIT which seemed to be in keeping with the theme but didn't make much sense. I suspect there may be a visual clue from the drawn tentacles to indicate where to put the template. samantha73 really nailed this for her first post on this forum. How did you come up with that idea? This entire hunt was so clever.
