In case anyone is interested, there is some information about the publishing company (Fantasy Press) on the Michigan trademark database.

That's cool. I've looked into Roy a bit and he does seem like someone who would have built a hunt.

Hi Forest,
Info is listed under “Fantasy Publishing Company”. Interestingly, the owner listed was two hours away from the PO BOX given in the hunt.
Please let me know if anyone ever has contact with publisher or author!

Just had a realisation about "Cam Kaskgn". When you try to pronounce "Kaskgn", doesn't it sound a lot like "Gascoigne"? (As most of you probably know, Bamber Gascoigne accompanied Kit Williams when he buried his Golden Hare in 1979.) Could this have been the inspiration for this odd, non-existent surname?

Interesting thought. And, you have CAM and BAMber.
From wiki:
"Gascoigne wrote Quest for the Golden Hare, a 1983 account of the internationally publicised treasure hunt associated with the publication in 1979 of Kit Williams' book Masquerade.[6] On 8 August 1979, Gascoigne was witness to the burial by Williams of a unique jewelled, solid gold hare pendant in an earthenware jar "somewhere in Britain". The book documents the search and a scandal associated with finding it"

Hi All.
I looked for the author through several means over the years. I never could figure out who it was. I give the group credit for finding “Cam.” Odd timing since he was found several months after I started this thread.
Only a few ways I could see to locate him. The illustrator and jeweler do not seem to know his identity. The PO BOX would be confidential and records (if they exist) would be hard to obtain. I thought the trademark would be another route to take but the owner of “FANTASY PUBLISHING COMPANY” does not seem connected???
My only other thought was regarding the writer of a treasure hunting magazine that had contact with him in the early 90s.
Regardless, while this contact is an interesting development, it certainly leads to more questions than answers. It also doesn’t really help us solve the hunt, but it’s nice to know it’s still active.
One area that might help would be identifying the cipher in the text that reveals the authors name. Knowing the cipher would be helpful to rule out other means as a possible clue to the hunt. My first guess : the first letters of the strange names throughout the book. The “K” is where I would start due to frequency. Other than the misspellings in the verse, I am not sure where else a ‘unique cipher’ would be hidden.
Thoughts?

The PO BOX would be confidential PO Box registrations are not actually confidential. In fact, if you go to the post office and ask who is renting a particular box, they are required to give you the answer. (I've done this several times when I've seen "help wanted" ads and I've been curious about who is hiring.)
I have no idea whether they give out the rental history though. It might be impossible to find out who was renting the box decades ago.

Interesting. My understanding was that the person whom identified the author was not local. Maybe they were able to access the PO BOX information. I know this idea has been discussed in the past. It would certainly be the most direct route.

I talked to the Post Office years ago and their PO Box history didn't go back to the 80's. The current holder had no association with TGAT.

One other possibility, judging from the appearance of the book, the printer may have known who the author was. This was a bound book and was clearly not done at home on a photocopy machine. From my research, Dickinson printing was one of the biggest printers at the time in Grand Rapids.
