When I hear the name Twain I think of a writer, The Call newspaper reporter or a "messenger", i.e. Hermes "The Messenger". One has to decide if Twain is famous for his writings or a tree. Besides a cross, the image is laid out similar to a caduceus with one serpent. Hermes carries a caduceus. The clock on the "turn table" is actually a compass. Look at the vines on the left and right of the clock. They spell E and W. E and W are placed on the wrong sides. It really doesn't matter since the direction is South (6 o'clock). So even if you flip the image the 6 o'clock would still be 6. South of a building? Cable car is going north/south with the turn table at each end, Powell Street line. The windy stem indicates rotation. Map of California is placed in an strategic location next to the table with the north touching the wall molding. So north of California Street. One other thing related to the whole of the painting. It's said to be modeled after The Virgin of the Rocks. It was painted for the church of San Francesco Maggiore in Milan. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgin_of_the_RocksThe Francesca building is at 850 Powell. It's on the same block as the UC at 800 Powell. Francesca means "free man". Is that a Lincoln reference? Honest Abe Mount or Fair Mount? I can already taste the bacon!
