A black and white painting with a dead dog bleeding. It's pretty symbolic, really, as the seeker must pass the hound to enter Hel to retrieve the treasure. Because FF took it with him. Symbolically speaking. Across a rainbow bridge. ------------- Then Óðinn rose, | the enchanter old, And the saddle he laid | on Sleipnir's back; Thence rode he down | to Niflhel deep, And the hound he met | that came from hell.
Bloody he was | on his breast before, At the father of magic | he howled from afar; Forward rode Óðinn, | the earth resounded Till the house so high | of Hel he reached.------------- "Although unnamed, this dog is normally assumed to be Garmr.[5] Alternatively, Garmr is sometimes assumed to be identical to Fenrir. Garmr is sometimes seen as a hellhound, comparable to Cerberus." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GarmrAre you sure you're ready for this?

I'm following you. Per Forrest, "Occasionally it's wise for the fox to dress like the hound." Have you made that work for you?

Hi Heidini. Yeah, that's the one I remember, and I really never figured anything out from that either. I've seen comments about Forrest saying "Occasionally it's wise for the fox to dress like the hound." But I don't recall ever seeing where it came from. So I can't figure anything out from the quote because I'm lacking context.

The only relationship to my OP here that I can think of is that foxes "play dead" sometimes. Playing dead like the hound in my OP?

Doh, I found the quote. "Occasionally it's wise for the fox to dress like the hound." The book TTOTC, page 7 right at the bottom.

"I realized fear one morning, with the blare of the fox hunter's sound. When they're all chasin' the poor bloody fox, 'tis safer to be dressed like the hound." Jack Higgins

I think it means stealthiness.

I think it means stealthiness. Yes, that makes sense.

I signed back on. I'm glad you found it - I should've referenced it earlier. I think you are on trail worth pursuing. I've been trying to solve the statement for maybe over 3 months now - just can't seem to adjust my numbers properly, in my mind.

A fox dressed as a hound is a poser, a fake, a fraud....deceiver, decoy, pretender, put-on, cheat, actor, hook, double-crosser.
-----------------------------------------------------------
In the book, Fenn describes the oil painting by Gilbert Gaul as black and white, depicting "a man standing on a wooden bridge holding a smoking pistol, with a dead dog at his feet bleeding all over the boards."
Bleeding = sad, depressed, mournful, heavy-hearted, weeping Boards = timber, shelter, administration, bureau (chest), committee, bench (banco), lumber

Rob, I saw something right away that was confirmation of something I already had. Which is why I saw it right away. I really can't say more, it gives away too much of one piece of the puzzle. So I had another thing to puzzle over, what to say.
