I like the concept of a promise fulfilled...a promise to who? His father? Eric Sloane? Is the medal from the Vietnamese in there? We're missing a connection to something....or someone.

I like a promise to himself. I like that. He had fulfilled his promise to Olga. He had promised the waterfall that he'd return right? Then he discovered the graves. Eventually, somewhere in his mind all of those things converged - the Philadelphia thumb incident, all of that "no one is greater" stuff...but where does that lead? Did he make another promise when he got cancer - and if so, to go or return to - where?
It's a bit surprising that after 10 years and 100k+ people (maybe) - that everyone has missed the point.

. I could see it having the interpretation you explained. I had in the back of my mind, that there is another thing Forrest said, that there is something in the chest that he's saving for the one who finds it, or am I remembering that incorrectly? He's said there is something special in the chest for the finder that noone knows about. I think that is different than what he's talking about here. I think we need to ask what did Forrest do after his cancer went into remission? I mean surely he had to keep his mind interested. He sold his gallery immediately when diagnosed. Almost twenty or so years are missing from what we know about him before the chest was hidden.

Yes, something is desinitely remiss for that while, although he did say he worked on the poem and collected the booty for 15 years. I believe there is a quote about that that 5hat begins â so from the time... ? â

I replied in the other thread, but you prompt different thoughts here. The 200 foot searcher did not see anything obvious, but they had at most two clues solved. Is the "right spot" is likely to be within 200 feet then? If so, how do you get there? Are you led there by the clues, or did you get there randomly, by searching a large area? If the poem is precise, then the obvious thing must be something small and close to the chest, likely not visible from 200 feet.

Here's another quote to think about from this article stories.californiasunday.com/2015-07-05/the-everlasting-forrest-fenn/âWhen somebody finds that treasure chest, everybodyâs going to say, âMy God! Why didnât I think of that?â" Is he talking about the treasure location or how it's hidden? The good news is that when we find it it won't matter that we missed something. We will have arrived there regardless according to Mr. Fenn, and be asking ourselves why we didn't think of that.

I wonder if the thing that should be obvious to you can be discerned from looking in the right spot on Google Earth?

Maybe. I think it will be the blaze. A headstone/or bronze nameplate with FF name (or family pets name) that will be embedded/cemented into the stone above the chest. Since the special place should be physically easy to access, but isolated (people don't normally go there) then the special place cannot be a fishing hole (imo).
