According to Duncan the Key was a tilted hexagram. There is however another simple idea for the identity of the Key that makes a lot more sense to me. The inscription on the tomb in Poussin's 2nd version of the 'Shepherds of Arcadia' reads ET IN ARCADIA EGO. In the 17th century when Nicholas Poussin painted this painting macaronic language was something of a fad. At it's most basic macaronic language is language that is a mixture of different lnaguages. The word ARCADIA in French is ARCADIE which is an anagram of the Latin ARCA DEI. www.lueur.org/bible/1samuel4/vulgate 21 Et vocavit puerum Ichabod, dicens : Translata est gloria de Israël, quia capta est arca Dei, et pro socero suo et pro viro suo ;
22 et ait : Translata est gloria ab Israël, eo quod capta esset arca Dei.In Samuel 1 4:21-22, the words ARCA DEI appear. They refer to the ARK OF THE COVENANT. www.vatican.va/special/rosary/documents/litanie-lauretane_en.htmlArk of the covenantIn the Litany of Loreto which was used in Rome's churches at the time when Poussin was alive, the ARK OF THE COVENANT is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary. ARCADIA = ARCADIE = ARCA DEI = ARK OF THE COVENANT = BLESSED VIRGIN MARY From the above correlations the conclusion may be derived that ARCADIA refers to the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY. If this is so then the inscription, ET IN ARCADIA EGO, can be read as ALSO IN THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY I. If interpreted in this way the inscription would seem to be a reference to Jesus since he was once in the womb of B.V.M. catholicinsight.com/the-sweetness-of-the-name-of-mary/#:~:text=St%20Ephrem%20(306%2D373),the%20odour%20of%20Divine%20grace. According to the Church father St. Ephrem St Ephrem (306-373), Father and Doctor of the Church, says: The name of Mary is the key to the gates of Heaven.
Since Mary can be correlated with the Key to the gates of Heaven it may be concluded that Mary is the Key that Poussin is said to hold, and the key of the Maranatha puzzle.

Since Mary can be correlated with the Key to the gates of Heaven it may be concluded that Mary is the Key that Poussin is said to hold, and the key of the Maranatha puzzle. One of the great mysteries of Poussin's second version of the Shepherds's of Arcadia, is the identity of the majestic female figure at the right of the painting. It has been suggested by various commentators that this female figure is The Muse Clio. Clio was the muse of history and had a rememberence of the whole of history. The shepherd in red seems to inquiring of her if she knows the identity of the "Ego" in the tomb. Since she is able to remember the whole of history , it seems reasonable that she would know the answer to the shepherd's question. Perhaps she does. nameberry.com/babyname/clioThe name Clio is girl's name of Greek origin meaning "glory".In French THE MUSE CLIO translates as LA MUSE CLIO. The name CLIO means GLORY. Therefore LA MUSE CLIO = LA MUSE GLORY. LA MUSE is an anagram of the name SAMUEL. If one looks up GLORY in a bible concordance and looks at the four entries for the Book of Samuel, it will be discovered that one of the passages that contains the word GLORY is SAMUEL 1 4: 21 www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Samuel%204%3A21&version=NIV21 She named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The Glory has departed from Israel”—because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband.This verse is the same verse in which the words ARCA DEI appears in the Latin version of the verse. It may be concluded therefore that the the female figure in the painting is also indicating that the words ARCA DEI/ARK OF THE COVENANT are important for identifying the occupant of the tomb.

Using Dumpling language, the translation of, and the understanding of, the painting's French-language title, 'Les Bergers d'Arcadie', would then be 'The Shepherds of the Ark of God', or, if we consider your theory, using the term 'FOEDERIS ARCA' as a Litany of Loreto title to the Virgin Mary, the meaning of the title of the painting would transition to 'The Shepherds of the Virgin Mary', or, in a segue, 'The Shepherds of the Key'. The last seems like too much of a liberty to me. You went from ARCADIE to ARCA DEI to FOEDERIS ARCA to VIRGIN MARY. Your method stops being Dumpling at ARCA DEI, but, OK, fine. But you then ditch the association of Mary with the Ark, to swap it out for the next title in the litany, JANUA COELI, meaning 'The Gates of Heaven'. OK. Gates have locks and need keys. But why would Poussin work hard to conceal an Ark reference that you claim is intended to refer to the Virgin Mary, if what Poussin really wanted was to refer to Mary as a GATE, or, as you segue to, a KEY, which is her NAME?
How is the viewer meant to know when to stop inferring things from the title of the painting? How is the viewer to know that ARCA DEI should be understood as a reference to Mary, and not the Ark? The 1 Samuel verse clearly means the item, the Ark of the Covenant. WHy would the viewer jump from 1 Samuel to the Litany of Loreto?
JANUA COELI is the next title in the litany for Mary after FOEDERIS ARCA. The title JANUA COELI describes Mary as a GATE. No reference to a KEY is mentioned in the litany. You then drop the litany, and segue to a single personal opinion held by one saint who was born in 306 BC. Saint Ephrem does indeed state that the NAME 'Mary' IS THE KEY to the gate, but he does not state that she is the gate itself, contradicting the title in the litany. Indeed, two later saints, Saint Ambrose and Saint T. Aquinas, contradict Saint Ephrem, and state that Mary herself IS THE GATE, and not the KEY, but that Mary has the KEYS, plural, to the GATE. I assume that this possession by her of the keys is because, as Mary is the gate, she can choose to be locked or unlocked. Your attempt to combine idea of the NAME Mary as a KEY with the idea of Mary as a GATE would mean that Mary must use her own NAME to lock or unlock herself! Who do you think she is? SHAZAM?
The litany that you refer to does compare Mary with the Ark. However, the next litany title compares Mary to the Gate of Heaven. Not a Key. But she has the KEYS, plural. How is the viewer meant to know to go from the title in the litany that describes Mary as a GATE, to the words, found somewhere-else, of one saint who describes her NAME as a KEY? A saint that is contradicted by two other saints who state that Mary has the KEYS, plural, and is not a key herself, but a GATE, a claim which agrees with, and must also be the source for, the litany title.
Sticking strictly to your Dumpling theory, the 1 Samuel verse uses the Latin words 'ARCA DEI' to refer to the actual Ark of the Covenant. That is where the Dumpling stops. Who, then, are the shepherds of the Ark of the Covenant?

archive.org/details/bub_gb_Ujz9mEdUL_8C/page/51/mode/2upRuby, Take a look at Polyanthea Mariana by Ippolito Marracci(see above). It Is a dictionary of titles used to refer to Mary. Arca Dei is one of them. Just because the Litany of Loreto uses the term Arca Foederis does not in any way negate the idea that Arca Dei also refers to the Ark of the Covenant and Mary. Similarly just because Gate of Heaven is listed in the Litany of Loreto also as a title of Mary does not imply that the Key of the Gates Heaven is not a title that can be applied to her. The aim of the puzzle is to find The Key. Duncan described the Key as working just like a physical key. The term Key of the Gates of Heaven seems to imply a key that works just like a physical key and so the idea that Mary is the Key seems a lot more reasonable idea to me than a tilted hexagram for which no explanation was given as to how to use it.Have you any idea for a Key that is better than the one I have suggested? Arcadia = Mary = The Key is an association that works in the context of the phrase ET IN ARCADIA EGO. Just because it works in this context does not mean it has to work in any other context like “The Shepherds of Arcadia”. Your argument is a bit like saying that because x= 1 in one mathematical equation, then x must equal 1 in all mathematical equations! Another title of Mary is The Rod of Aaron. This was a rod that brought forth buds like the straight rod with buds depicted in the images in the book. This rod appears in images 1,2,3,& 4 in the book- “In four scenes is the Key found”. “In the uneven divide of their number is it’s shape defined” 1+2+3+4 = 10. Uneven divide of 10 = 1 = shape of rod of Aaron. Conclusion: The Key = The Rod of Aaron = Mary.

Well, you sure have painted me in here, BOW-TIE. As the Litany of Loreto was compiled by Catholics who were fan-girling about the Virgin Mary with a giddy fever that approaches idolisation, they appropriated and conjured up as many biblical titles as they could in order to apply them to Mary. You have in fact created your own formula, because x = Mary, then x must equal Mary in all equations! Hmmm. Perhaps it is you who have painted yourself in. Or is it, perhaps, that you thought that the Litany of Loreto was about Mary MAGDALENE?

The idea that The Key is the Blessed Virgin Mary, can also be derived from alchemy as well as the Bible. Alchemy is another theme in the Maranatha puzzle. In his books Le Mystere des cathedrales(1926) and Les Demeures philosophales(1930) the alchemist Fulcanelli quotes extensively from a work called "La Clef Du Cabinet Hermetique". He describes it as a 'precious anonymous manuscript from the eighteenth century'.Until 2013, no copy of "La Clef Du Cabinet Hermetique" was known to exist. In 2013 however, a manuscript copy of the work was found in the New York Public Library by Juan Duc Perez and Christer Boke. An English translation of " La Clef Du Cabinet Hermetique" by Juan Duc Perez, Christer Boke and John Koopmans was published in 2020. On p 160 of this book, in the chapter entitled "Of the Mercury of the Philosophers" it states that: "This is the place to speak of that admirable water, of which the philosophers tell so many virtues, and which they call their mercury par excellence, the composition of which they have hidden by an infinity of terms only known to the true philosophers, by allegories, similitudes, and by a thousand borrowed names, and under terms not only equivocal, but even opposed.....This water is the key and the masterpiece of the Hermetic Philosophy....archive.org/details/bub_gb_Ujz9mEdUL_8C/page/307/mode/2upOn page 308 of "Polyanthea Mariana"(1694) by Ippolitto Marracci one of the titles given for the Blessed Virgin Mary is Mercurius(Mercury). Since mercury is equated with the water of the philosopher, which is called 'The Key', the conclusion may be derived that The Key may be equated with The Blessed Virgin Mary.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Et_in_Arcadia_ego_(Guercino)#/media/File:Et-in-Arcadia-ego.jpgNicolas Poussin was not the first person to use the phrase ET IN ARCADIA EGO. It's first appearance was in a painting by the artist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri commonly called Guercino. Guercino was from the town of CENTO in Italy. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiesa_del_Rosario,_Cento Construction of the church began in 1633, using designs by Algarotto, commissioned by the Confraternity del Rosario, who was operating initially from a church in Borgo da Sera inferiore. The church was consecrated in 1645. Guercino was for many years prior of the confraternity; and he helped design the facade. Part of the funds came from ex votos in gratitude for cessation of the plague epidemic of 1631.Guercino was a prior of the Confraternity del Rosario in Cento. He produced a number of drawings/ paintings on the theme of the Madonna of Loreto and numerous paintings of the the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Confraternity del Rosario was a confraternity devoted to the veneration of the Virgin Mary.

It is my understanding that the Key unlocks the Grail That is my understanding too, A, and there is strong evidence linking the understanding of the Key that I have given, to the Grail. I’ll come to that at some point. The question at this point is how is “The Key” used? The answer again comes from using macaronic language. The Key is an anagram of “Y theke”. In Welsh “Y” means “The” and in Greek “theke” means “tomb”. So “The Key” can be understood as also meaning “The Tomb”. Since “The Key” has previously been correlated with The Blessed Virgin Mary it can be surmised that the Blessed Virgin Mary identifies the tomb.

Yes Jenny that has been my thinking all along, but to date have been unable to make any link between the number that was given as the number for submitting an entry and the Key. If I remember correctly the number was found by some by looking in the computer coding of the Timemonk website,( which strikes me as cheating) and by extracting it from some sort of pyramid of characters found in the puzzle. Do do you remember the page on the Timemonk website which the number opened that had the message “ Congratulations ....” and a space in which to enter what “the beast” was? It also had a photo of The Timemonk on it with a sheepish smile.

In this way another link between the Grail and the B.V.M. is observed. www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/4171752.pdfIt seems to be pretty well known that the allegorical conception of the body as a world, city, or castle, was a not unusual conceit in middle English times.... The earliest of these is Robert Grosseteste's translation into Anglo-Norman of the French Le Chasteau d'Amour in the first half of the thirteenth century. Here, the castle, which takes the place of the world in the microcosmic idea, is an allegorized representation of the body of the Virgin Mary ...
