On the Trail for the Golden Owl ( Sur la trace de la chouette d'or ) is an unsolved armchair treasure hunt. Somewhere in France remains buried a 'bronze owl' which can be used to claim the treasure of the Golden Owl. The book was published in 1993 by 'Max Valentin', who has since passed. However, the hunt continues on with the Golden Owl waiting to go to the person who can discover the exact location of the buried proxy. Within the book are 11 riddles and images.... these along with other 'tricks and clues' need applied to complete the puzzle and claim the Golden Owl. Here is a PDF of the riddles and images: noktua.free.fr/images/stories/_Site/Generalites/Livre_3.pdfMichel Becker was the illustrator for the hunt of the Golden Owl..... he has recently released another treasure hunt: The Golden Treasure of The Entente Cordiale. Both beginning to being discussed here on the MW Forum.... might one hunt help solve another?

For those working on Guardians of Legends..... there is an order to the postcards that need established (given in the PDF received upon registering).... which there is an order to be found of the Riddles in the Golden Owl....
Will there be an order needed to be solved for The Golden Treasure of The Entente Cordiale riddles?

I liked the 4th edition of the Chouette d'Or; however, the sizing for the illustrations isn't consistent. The 780 enigma won't get you the usual 33 cm for the circumference, and the 500 enigma won't give you 18.5 cm for the ruler.

I've been working on this hunt for a while and hope to be heading to France with my owl digging shovel when travel is allowed! I think it's great that the clues and images are freely available, but it is worth noting that this hunt almost certainly involves drawing lines on a map of France. The one map that was used to set the hunt was the Michelin 989. This was published up until about 2002. It's easy to get old copies on eBay here in the UK and they're very cheap. It's possible other maps or Google Earth would work, but as some specific measurements are given (eg. 185km) it's possible other maps will plot slightly different lines. Just my thoughts, but I'm sure a general solution could be worked out and then you could get the 989 to try it on that.

I have found a final zone that I feel pretty good about. But...I'm concerned I won't be able to figure out the super solution because I don't speak French. I can use a translator but I will lose word counts, letter counts etc. I gonna keep on tryin' tho.
Good luck jo! I'm on your site every day.
wigreeves...understandable after seeing the effects of the Fenn treasure events.

Hmm? I have a few questions , What is it worth now ? What are the laws in France about Treasure Hunts of this kind? and How do you think others emotional response might be if it is found after 28 years .... I seem to have trouble judging how others emotions will manifest ...my brain is wired different . These are good questions! The owl was put up for auction in 2014 with an estimate of 100,000 euro. I think it would have sold for more, but hard to say. The auction was stopped by the A2CO an organisation set up to protect the hunt. I think because that case was won by the A2CO the prize is now protected and would have to be given to the winner. There are no laws specifically about treasure hunts that I'm aware of in France. Max Valentin ran hunts before this one, most ending in public forests, and I think there was no trouble. There's quite a dedicated community of 'chouetteur' in France, busy forums and a meet-up each year. I think people would be dissapointed if the owl was found, but there'd also be some relief, and hopefully closure to finally know what the clues meant. Max wrote a book of solutions before he died, so perhaps that would still be published? There would be a lot of interest in his words from so long ago. Apparently this book is on a floppy disk... That shows how long this has been going!

On the intro page it has: "The Puzzles are listed in order."

Something new is going on in the world of the Golden Owl. Seems to be controversial. I haven't made sense of it yet. Would anyone who understands care to explain? Thanks.
